Semi-final spot for Heathcote • By Gordon Findlater HEATHCOTE’S 2A team have pulled off two final day victories to qualify for the Barry Hadlee Series semi-finals. They will now take on East Christchurch Shirley at Burwood Park tomorrow for a spot in Monday’s final. After starting their metro cricket twenty20 campaign with two loses from three games, Heathcote’s only chance of qualifying for the semi-finals was to win both of their final two games and by a comfortable margin. Burnside West Christchurch University were their first test on Saturday and Heathcote didn’t muck around setting an imposing total batting first. Opener Matt Mealings carried the innings with an unbeaten knock of 90 to help his side through to 169/7 from their 20 overs. Heathcote’s bowlers backed Mealings’ effort in the second innings as they restricted the opposition to 124/5 to secure the 45-run victory. The result meant that Heathcote now need to defeat Merivale Papanui in their afternoon match. However, a result itself would not be enough. Going into the match Merivale Papanui occupied the second and final play-off spot in pool two of the competition. They had one more win that Heathcote and also held a significant net run rate advantage. With a big win required, time was of the essence when Heathcote went into bat. Mealings once again set the tone at the top of the innings, backing up his unbeaten 90 with a quick fire 80 which included eight fours and five sixes. Craig Primmer then came to the crease later in the innings, clearing the boundary four times before being bowled for 60 as Heathcote finished on a monster total of 213/3. They now needed to dismiss Merivale Papanui cheaply to secure, and the bowlers rose to the occasion. Primmer backed up his half century with two wickets, while David Stack, Neranga Jayaweera and Tom Clay also chipped in with two wickets each to dismiss Merivale Papanui in the 19th over for just 91 runs. The 128-run win was more than enough to secure second spot in pool two for Heathcote. Both Merivale Papanui and Sydenham finished with the same competition points. JANUARY WAS a busy month for juniors at the Sumner Running Club who competed at a number of events around the country. The year opened with the Lovelock Classics in Timaru where Caleb Sutter, 11, and John Wells, 13, both captured victories. Caleb won the 11-year-old boys 100m sprint in a time of 13.73sec. He then finished second on the long jump, his jump of 3.93m saw him finish just two centimetres behind the winner. Caleb also competed in the shot SPRINTER: Luca Tracey travelled to Hastings to take part in the North Island Colgate games where he finished sixth in the 200m final. Athletes race away with wins put where he completed the podium with a throw of 6.45m to finish third. John ran away with the 800m title in Timaru with a blistering time of 2min 27sec. He also competed in the shot put where he finished fifth. John then joined fellow Sumner junior Beth Hunter, 13, at the South Island Colgate games in Invercargill. Competitors faced wet and windy conditions down south. Beth finished fourth in the high jump and 800m event and fifth in the 400m. John also had a strong weekend, finishing sixth in the 400m and eighth in the 80m hurdles. Sumner’s Luca Tracey competed in the 200m 11-year-old boys at the North Island Colgate games where he won his heat and went on to finish the final in sixth. Tim Ward, 14, and Victoria Wells, 16, also went to Dunedin to represent Canterbury in the grade 14-18 inter-provincials against Queensland, Otago and Southland.
