‘Prison-style’ fencing to stay
• By Bridget Rutherford
REDCLIFFS RESIDENTS have
lost a battle to have “prisonstyle”
fencing changed.
However, they have received
an apology for the confusing
consultation process.
The city council installed 2m
high safety fences along the cliff
side of Main Rd to keep people
out of the dangerous rock-fall
area in November.
However, Redcliffs Residents’
Association was angry as it
thought the pool-style fencing
was too tall, and it had “prison
style” spikes on the top which
was not in the original plan.
The association wrote to the
Linwood-Central-Heathcote
Community Board, requesting
it ask the city council to include
funding in the Annual Plan to
revise the extent and style of the
fencing.
It also criticised the consultation
process, saying the city
council had not listened to
residents’ requests to reduce
the height to 1.2m, and the
inclusion of spikes had not been
consulted on.
But in a Sumner Lyttelton
Corridor newsletter posted on
the city council website, city
services general manager Dave
Darrell Latham
Chris Doudney
Adamson apologised for the
confusion around the consultation
and justified why that fencing
was installed.
“We are sorry if there has
been confusion and angst
around some of the decisions
about the fencing.
“We assure you there has
never been any attempt to intentionally
mislead anyone.”
Mr Adamson said the city
council’s decision to install that
type of fencing was based on
safety, and expert advice.
INTRUSIVE: The spikes on top of the fencing was not part of the original
plan.
It had to use the spear top
pool-fencing because it was
manufactured locally.
Residents’ association acting
chairman Chris Doudney said
he had not seen the newsletter,
and was not aware of other
members of the association seeing
it.
He said the issue lay with the
consultation process.
“They didn’t really consult
about anything really, they were
just telling us this is what we’re
going to do.”
Community board member
Darrell Latham said the fencing
was unlikely to be changed.
He said the city council needed
to ensure its communication
around consultation options
was correct and not subject to
misinterpretation in the future.
Fencing has been installed at
Moa Bone Point, and will also
be installed at Shag Rock Reserve
and Wakefield Ave, from
Nayland to Paisley Sts as part of
the Sumner Lyttelton Corridor
project.
