Big plans for sleepy Church Bay
• By Bridget Rutherford
A PUBLIC meeting will be
held next week to discuss
concerns over a plan to build
a commercial development in
sleepy Church Bay (above).
Spence Developments is proposing
to build a supermarket,
four shops, a coffee shop, and a
30-seat cinema on the 8311m 2 of
land at 139-143 Marine Drive,
behind the On The Spot store.
Plans show there would also
be 111 car parks, which could
be accessed from Marine
Drive and Patiki Pl.
The developers are also
considering reopening a
petrol station on the site.
The resource consent
application is expected
to be lodged with the city
council next month.
The meeting will be
held at Diamond Harbour
Community Hall on Tuesday,
Richard
Suggate
October 17, at 7.45pm.
Developer Doug
Spence, planning consultant
James Hook and
architect Dean Grant
will speak about the
proposal.
Diamond Harbour
Community Association
chairman Richard Suggate
said neighbouring
properties had received
pamphlets about the plan last
week, which caused a “stir”.
“This is sleepy little Diamond
Harbour.”
Mr Suggate said people would
welcome more shops if they
could get the business, but the
population was growing slowly.
“People come to Diamond
Harbour because they’re looking
for something different from
town,” he said.
Injury
fears at
Diamond
Harbour
ferry
wharf
• By Bridget Rutherford
FEARS PASSENGERS will
injure themselves while
getting on and off the ferry at
Diamond Harbour Wharf has
prompted staff to look into what
improvements can be made.
Black Cat
Cruises told the
Banks Peninsula
Community
Board about
the difficulty
of passengers
boarding and
disembarking the
ferry from the
Paul
Milligan
Diamond Harbour side.
Chief executive Paul Milligan
said there was no ramp leading
onto the ferry, so the passengers
had to climb down steps.
There was a risk of passengers
falling between the wharf and
ferry into the water, he said.
“We’ve just identified with the
number of people we’re carrying
across there, getting on and off
the boat at the Diamond Harbour
side is not quite as easy as
we would have liked.”
FROM
THE
EDITOR’S
DESK
SLEEPY CHURCH Bay may not
be so sleepy anymore.
We reveal today (see page 1)
plans to build a commercial
development there which would
include a supermarket, four shops,
a coffee shop, and a 30-seat cinema
behind the On the Spot store.
There would also be 111 car parks.
And needless to say the plans
are causing a stir.
If you read the feedback (see
page 10) to our article last week
over an idea to turn the failed
Maori Village site at Ferrymead
into a dog park, then it’s a nobrainer.
The verdict is unanimous – dogs
should be let loose on the site.
Readers also have given the
thumbs up to the re-opening of
the Redcliffs Dairy.
It’s all about the ice creams and
of course Minod Vinod’s great
service.
Ferry parking fight continues
• By Emily O’Connell
MORE OPTIONS will be
looked into before bus parking
is decreased at the Diamond
Harbour Ferry terminal in
Lyttelton.
It follows a decision by the
Lyttelton Port Company to
reduce bus parking spaces from
three to one and not provide a
pick-up/drop-off zone.
An urgent meeting was held
by the Banks Peninsula Community
Board with the LPC,
Environment Canterbury and
the city council on Monday.
It was decided
at the meeting
that the LPC and
ECan would look
into more options
and come back to
the board in a few
weeks’ time.
Peter Davie
Diamond Harbour
Residents’
Association
chairman Richard Suggate said
the further investigation is good
but he’s not pessimistic nor optimistic
about the final outcome.
He said the LPC should put
the public interest above their
own.
Community board member
Jed O’Donoghue said he’s
pleased other resolutions will
be considered but ultimately the
DECISIONS: The Lyttelton Port Company and ECan are going
to look into more parking options near the ferry terminal.
PHOTO: MARTIN HUNTER
board don’t have the final say.
“At the end of the day we can
only influence them because its
their land,” he said.
An online petition calling for
better public access to the Diamond
Harbour ferry terminal
has attracted more than 230
signatures in two weeks.
Set up by the Diamond Harbour
Residents Association, the
petition calls on the city council
and Environment Canterbury
to “ensure that within 100m of
the Diamond Harbour ferry
terminal, there is adequate bus
parking on the Lyttelton wharf
and that there is a drop-off/pickup
zone for private vehicles.”
Mr Suggate told a board meeting
two weeks ago that the LPC’s
refusal to provide a drop-off
zone would force the infirm,
disabled or with heavy parcels,
to walk from Norwich Quay.
Port company chief executive
Peter Davie said LPC staff met
with the Banks Peninsula Community
Board on July 31.
Mr Davie previously said the
they are working with ECan to
ensure it has minimum impact
on current services and it will
not affect ferry users at all.
He said an upgrade of the existing
Diamond Harbour Ferry
facilities will take place at the
same time as the LPC staff car
park is being built adjacent to
Waterfront House and the work
should be completed before
Christmas.
“We will work with Black Cat
Cruises to enable people to have
access. If there are particular
items that require to be around
50m closer to the ferry terminal
than they can achieve via the
stairs, then we will accommodate
them through the port,’’ Mr
Davie said.
Black Cat Cruises chief executive
Paul Milligan said they had
been involved with discussions
about the issue with LPC and
ECan.
“An ideal site is to move us
down to the west end with the
new marina, which will be new
and there will be room for buses
to move around. But we’re not
going to get that in the near future
so we just need to make the
best of the facilities we currently
have.”
He said that was part of LPC’s
long term plan, but would take
time to come into fruition.
PROPOSAL: The area where a
new complex may be built.
Big plans for
Church Bay
•From page 1
“Seeing something that kind of
looks like a downtown shopping
mall is a bit of a shock and not
really what people appreciate.”
Plans for the development show,
once completed, it is intended the
operators of the On The Spot store
would become proprietors of the
supermarket.
Landscaping would include red
beech, pohutukawa and cabbage
trees. Timber fences would be
built along the boundaries to
reduce sound for next door
neighbours.
History on show in garden tour
• By Sarla Donovan
THE GOVERNORS Bay House
and Garden Show is back for the
first time in 11 years.
Homes and gardens large and
small make up the 13 on show,
including several which have undergone
major post-earthquake
repairs.
The self-guided tour includes
recently restored St Cuthbert’s
Church – built between 1960-
62, it is one of the oldest stone
churches in the country.
It was designed by George
Mallinson, who was also the
architect of the Holy Trinity
Church in Lyttelton.
Waitahuna, the original Dyer
homestead in Governors Bay is
also part of the tour, along with
one of New Zealand’s finest formal
gardens, the internationally
significant Ohinetahi owned by
Sir Miles Warren.
Ohinetahi Homestead was
built in 1864 and has been
restored after suffering serious
damage in the September 4,
2010, earthquake.
One of the PTA organising
committee members, Felicity
Robertson, said it was very generous
of the owners to include it
in the tour as it is normally $15
to visit.
will stay afloat after a
recommendation not to give
it funding for repairs was
dismissed.
The Linwood-Central-
Heathcote Community Board
unanimously decided last
week to grant $4000 to the
Sumner Community Pool
Inc towards the cost of fixing
leaks.
Originally city council staff
said the application requesting
$6688 did not fit the criteria
for the board’s discretionary
response fund because it was
“capital works”.
Staff recommended
the board decline
the request. But at
the board’s meeting,
city councillor Yani
Johanson moved a
motion to grant money
from the fund anyway.
He said the $4000
grant was in line with
what the group received
last year.
“I am very supportive of the
Sumner pool as this has been a
tremendous community asset
Yani
Johanson
over a number of years run by
dedicated people in the local
area.”
The board also
requested staff advice
on the availability of
chemicals for the pool.
Work to fix leaks in
the 25m outdoor pool
would cost $6688. The
pool committee would
make up the shortfall.
Board member
Darrell Latham
seconded Cr Johanson’s
motion.
He said in spite of the
staff recommendation, the
board recognised it was
important for the work to be
done because the pool was
a “well run and widely used
community asset”.
“I’m thrilled with this
outcome as this is such a well
used community facility.”
Most of the running costs
for the community-owned
and managed pool come from
key rental, with about 360 keys
available for local families to
rent at $150 a season.
•The pool is due to open
for the summer season on
November 11 at 7am.
Diamond Harbour ferry wharf injury fears
•From page 1
Mr Milligan said they carried
about 2000 passengers a
week.
He said they wanted a floating
pontoon, like on the Lyttelton
side, but he understood
it wasn’t a quick fix.
“We just wanted to start the
conversations around it.”
The board asked city council
staff to look into whether any
maintenance could improve
safety and access.
City council neighbourhood
and sports parks operations
manager Al Hardy said Black
Cat had raised accessibility
concerns about the wharf.
“Council will respond to any
concerns about safety as they
arise.”
Mr Hardy said there was
$4.24 million budgeted in the
long term plan to replace the
wharf. But that was spread
between 2022-2025.
“If funds where bought
forward in the long term
plan, to replace the wharf, it
is highly likely other projects
would need to be pushed out;
this is a decision for council
to make during the LTP
process.”
He said any redesign would
include maximising safety and
ease of use.
The city council had also
received a complaint recently
about the slipperiness of the
dinghy ramp on the wharf,
which was inspected and
cleaned, Mr Hardy said.
Mr Milligan said their ideal
situation was for the wharf’s
replacement to be brought
forward.
Diamond Harbour
Community Association
chairman Richard Suggate
said some people who were
elderly, had young children
or were disabled, chose not to
take the ferry because of the
access issues. He welcomed the
city council looking into the
issue.
“It’s an important lifeline for
the community.”
Fun to be had at gala
SPRING HAS sprung, and
Heathcote Valley School is
gearing up for their annual
twilight gala.
It’s the main fundraising event
for the school and organiser Jina
Russell said she’d been planning
since June for a “brilliant”
community get-together which
usually attracted around 2500
people.
“I really love the atmosphere
of getting it ready and everyone
helping out. And just seeing
kids running around having fun
and families relaxing and being
able to catch up.”
This was her first year
running the event, which was
“scary, as the previous years
it has been an amazing lady
called Mel. I’ve got bit shoes to
fill.”
The Friday night timeslot
made for a “relaxed, after-work
environment for families,” Ms
Russell said. “It’s a great way to
end the week.”
The evening involves games
and activities to suit all ages, live
entertainment and music from
school and community groups,
stalls, food, raffles, chocolate
wheel and bake sale.
A silent auction will run all
night and there are mystery
COMMUNITY: The Heathcote Valley School kapa haka group
will perform at the opening of this year’s twilight gala.
boxes to buy as well. “You are
guaranteed to double your
money,” said Ms Russell
Local companies and services
have donated over $7,000 worth
of prizes for the auctions.
“We have a fantastic array
of craft stalls this year. (People
can) support local makers and
even do some early Christmas
shopping.”
Ms Russell is hoping the gala
will raise $15,000 this year,
which would go towards school
repairs.
Your Local Views
Readers respond to the
article regarding a lobby
effort to get a dog park for
Ferrymead
Cherry Daly – Regarding the
proposed dedicated dog park at
Ferrymead. I agree that the eastern
suburbs are in dire need of a
dedicated dog park. This site is
central to the region and would
be absolutely perfect. Many
thanks to city councillor Yani Johanson
for making this proposal
and hoping that the notoriously
anti-dog city council will see
their way clear to approving this
as soon as possible.
Michael Wilson – This is a
brilliant idea. I live in the area
and frequently take my dogs to
this area for exercise. I’m sure
this will go some way to controlling
the rabbits and stopping the
dirt bike guys being annoying
early evening. Bravo to the person
who thought of this.
Gayel Marquet – That
sounds like a fabulous idea but
the reason dogs love the beach
is that owners do too. Give the
owners a major unique reason
and features (a pond to splash
in) to attract them to Ferrymead
and then educate them to be off
the beach and I’m all for it – and
I don’t even have a dog. Also
re the article next to this about
skateboarding . . . here we go
again, one nimby (not in my
backyard) spoiling it for all –
give Sumner kids a place to go.
Paula Mayer and her dog
Frankie – I wish to support a
dog park at Ferrymead – to have
an alternative to the beach.
Jo Wilson – I was so happy
to read the article regarding a
proposal to turn the old Maori
Village site at Ferrymead into
a dog park. I have lived in Mt
Pleasant for a number of years
and have often thought that the
site would be perfect for a dog
park. I walk my dog around
there on a regular basis and
would definitely use it even
more if it were made more dog
friendly. The eastern and hill
suburbs including Lyttelton are
woefully lacking when it comes
to designated dog parks and I
PLAN: A report on whether the former Tamaki Maori Village site in Ferrymead could be turned
into a dog park is expected to return before Christmas.
have no doubt the Ferrymead Sarah Joseph – I think a
site would be utilised by many dog park in Ferrymead is an
of us dog owners on this side of excellent idea. I’ve been looking
town. Let’s hope the city council for safe places to let our dog have
will make it a reality.
a run off the lead.
Belinda Rooney – Yes, we
support this.
Anthea Wilson – Yes, I
would definitely use it – in fact I
already use it on occasion. Once
it is fully fenced and some of the
potholes filled it will be brilliant.
About a year and half ago I
emailed the city council suggesting
it but never heard back. So it
is a yes from me.
Ann Newsom – I think its
great idea to have a dog park at
Ferrymead on the old Maori village
site. It would be an alternative
to the beach which if full of
dogs at summer week ends.
Jill Reesby – Excellent idea.
Sounds like all of the buildings
have already been removed and
it is now bare land, so this would
be an excellent idea as more and
more restrictions on free running
of dogs is implemented.
Jeffrey Gibson – It already
is a dog park on most weekends.
Nick Stoneman – No to
a dog park got lots of them
already.
Karen Beaumont – If is not
going to be used again, leave the
buildings there and turn it into
a paintball adventure. At least
you can still make money off it.
Plenty of dog parks already, it’s
called the red zone.
Jenny Bradley – Can’t help
thinking this will attract people
who may not like seeing my dog
walking around with a dead rabbit
in his jaws.
Pamela Dixon – I reckon we
have plenty of areas for our dogs
to play, how about a theme park?
Way more exciting.
Tess Lenihan – Best idea
ever. A lot of dog walkers go here
already. Plus it might eliminate
the mass rabbit population up
there.
Anita Beukenholdt – Great
idea but plant the boundary with
edible fruit trees so it has more
than one purpose.
Margaret Nicholas – Great.
We need lots more dog parks.
They bring people together and
are great for socialising. Make it
like the Styx Park.
Hazel Cain – About time our
animals had a great park with
plenty of different smells to find.
Lisa Peters – How fantastic
our dogs love it there. Nice and
safe. Great place on a warm day.
Readers also welcome
back Vinod Manu from
Redcliffs Dairy after it was
closed for a revamp
Mechelle Wilson – Yah.
Best ice-creams ever. We called
in but saw you were closed.
Good excuse for another visit
soon.
Brydie Wolfe – The best
place ever not to mention the
best people who work there.
Lindsey Nicole Burton –
So good to have the dairy back, I
told him so when I went in too.
Jenny Sutherland – Yay,
my very favourite ice cream
shop. I was gutted when we
found it closed a few weeks back.
Tracey Butcher – Best ice
creams and he has my favourite
flavour, which most places don’t
have.
Sue Qunlivan – Such a hard
working family, they were one of
the first to open to help the community
after the 2011 quakes
and yes – fab ice cream.
Boat safety week a timely reminder
Lyttelton-based
navigational safety officer
Gary Manch writes about
Safer Boating Week which
starts on Friday
AS I am writing, I can see the
odd pleasure boat out in the
harbour making the most of the
lovely day. It’s great to see people
out there using our amazing
coast for recreation.
With Labour weekend not far
away, the start of the boating
season is here, and hopefully
the weather will be kinder to us
this season than last. To coincide
with the start of the season,
Maritime New Zealand is running
its nationwide Safer Boating
Week from Friday to October 20.
I want to highlight the week for
two reasons.
National MP
Nuk Korako
writes about
his plans now
that he has
been returned
to Parliament
WITH THE final election
results now announced and my
place back in Parliament as the
National List MP based in the
Port Hills confirmed, it’s time
to look ahead to my priorities
for the next three years. I
will continue to maintain an
office here in the Port Hills
and be available to assist with
constituent cases and concerns.
But there are also some
specific issues where I think I
can make a difference in the
Port Hills, particularly within
the environmental area.
In my last column, I talked
about the set up of Te Tapuwae
o Rakau Trust, which is
now working on developing
a structured approach to
replanting the Port Hills. I
believe leading the set up of
this trust is one of the most
important contributions I
First, it’s a timely reminder
to get you thinking about your
preparation for the upcoming
boating season. That means
making sure your vessel has
been serviced, making sure all
the safety equipment is still in
good working order, and making
sure you have two forms of communication
ready to take out on
the water. It also means checking
that lifejackets are the right size
and, in the case of inflatable
ones, checking the cylinders are
working and manually blowing
the lifejacket up, and leaving it
overnight to check there are no
leaks.
Second, it’s a good time to
make sure you know the boating
rules for where you are going to
be. In Canterbury, for example,
you must have an identifying
have been able to make to our
electorate, and I look forward to
seeing the work the trust does
and assisting where I can.
Another area of real
environmental importance here
in the Port Hills electorate is
the Heathcote River and Ihutai
Estuary. This is something I
was involved with even before
becoming an MP, in my role as
chairman of Te Ihutai Trust.
One of the greatest
community initiatives we have
in our electorate is the annual
Mother of All Clean Ups, and
I’ve always enjoyed getting in
and helping to clean up the
name or number on both sides
of your boat. Check out our
Navigation Safety Bylaw 2016
(item 20) for full details on
identification. It’s available at
Korako’s environmental focus
UNSIGHTLY:
About 720
volunteers,
including
Environment
Canterbury
councillor
Cynthia Roberts,
helped with the
annual Mother
of All Clean Ups
this year.
rubbish which pollutes the
waterway and its banks.
It’s a privilege to live in close
proximity to such a beautiful
landmark as the Heathcote
River. But winding through
residential areas carries risks for
water quality. There are many
issues around silt, chemicals
and run-off from metal building
products ending up in the river.
These are issues that will require
ongoing attention from local
authorities and from central
Government. I am committed
to using my position to leave a
better and cleaner environment
here in the Port Hills.
ecan.govt.nz/harbourmastersoffice/recreational-boating
or
contact us if you’re unsure.
That’s it from me this week.
Remember that if you have any
Thanks for voting
Labour MP
Ruth Dyson
is humbled
to have been
re-elected
to represent
the Port Hills
electorate
I SPOKE to a Mt Pleasant
woman who is in her 90s during
the week.
“This has been the most exciting
election since I was a young
girl,” she said.
And it certainly has been
exciting.
The final make-up of the
Government won’t be known
for a little while but we can be
satisfied the MMP system will
deliver us a Government of our
choosing, given that the party
vote determines how many MPs
each party ends up having.
I have been re-elected to
represent the constituents of
Port Hills in Parliament and I
feel humbled at the support I
received and want to express
my thanks to each and every
one of you – not just those that
supported my re-election, but
questions or queries, I am always
available to help at gary.manch@
ecan.govt.nz. Be safe out there
and respect each other on the
water.
everyone who participated in
our democratic process.
Some countries don’t have the
right for citizens to vote and we
really should appreciate it more
than many do.
We should make it as easy as
possible for people to vote and
I do hope that the technology
develops soon so that people
will have confidence in online
voting.
The advance voting was
certainly popular this year and
is a step in the right direction of
making voting more accessible.
There are many issues that
Ferrymead Rotary grants
behind community projects
Ferrymead Rotary
Club member Barbara
Crooks writes about
neighbourhood inititives
which the club supports
ONE OF the few positive
outcomes of the February
22, 2011, earthquake, was the
reinforcement of the value
of neighbours. Several major
donors gave funds to Rotary
to help neighbourhoods come
together and to support local
community projects.
Further donations have
allowed Rotary’s neighbourhood
committee to continue to
support community activities
and projects at a local level.
These grants are channelled
through local Rotary clubs.
Ferrymead Rotary has been
involved in a dozen or so of
these. The club has two on the
go right now – the Mt Pleasant
Response and Resilience
team and the South Brighton
Residents’ Association.
Robin Arnold, who coordinates
Mt Pleasant Response
and Resilience, says the grant
will be used primarily to
assemble community emergency
supplies, which will be kept at
Mt Pleasant School.
IMPROVED: Rotary grants were used to fund native planting
on Rocking Horse Rd.
She has a group of local
volunteers working to set up a
core community response group
with relevant knowledge, or
access to it. This also involves
developing a basic emergency
plan and broadening the role of
neighbourhood support groups
beyond crime watch to include
emergency procedures.
In South Brighton, the
residents’ association is using its
grant for planting on Rocking
Horse Rd. It’s a two-year project
to plant natives in beds on
street corners down both sides
of the road and along the
central island. “The road had
become sad and neglected,” said
association vice-president Lynda
Burdekin, who is co-ordinating
the project.
“It’s such a nice place to live,
we want to make the road really
nice as well. “
Ellesmere algal bloom
health warning lifted
THE ALGAL bloom health
warning on Te Waihora/Lake
Ellesmere has been lifted,
more than three years
after it was put in place.
Recent water testing
by the Canterbury
District Health Board
has shown the quantity
of potentially toxic bluegreen
algae (planktonic
cyanobacteria) in the lake
has decreased.
Concentrations are
now below the levels that were of
concern to public health.
The warning was issued in
February 2014.
Canterbury medical officer
of health Alistair Humphrey
Alistair
Humphrey
said Environment Canterbury’s
sampling of the lake would
continue on a monthly
basis.
“The public will be
informed when testing
shows that concentrations
have increased and there
is a risk to public health
again, which is likely to be
in the summer months,” he
said.
Exposure to algal bloom
can cause skin rashes,
nausea, stomach cramps,
tingling and numbness around
the mouth and fingertips.
When a warning is in place,
people should not touch the
water or drink it at any time.
Ellesmere has been lifted.
First Crater Rim Ultra a unique marathon
• By Gordon Findlater
SOME OF the country’s top
long distance and trail runners
will tackle a picturesque yet
unforgiving 50km course from
Diamond Harbour to Hansen
Park on Sunday.
The inaugural Crater Rim
Ultra will be a unique event.
It will be one of the few ultramarathons
in the world were the
athletes are taken to the start
line not only by bus but also by
boat – cruising from Lyttelton to
Diamond Harbour.
The Crater Rim Ultra will
see competitors start at the
Diamond Harbour rugby
grounds at 7.15am and head to
the summit of Mt Herbert, 919m
above sea level.
They will then continue on a
track to the top of Gebbies Pass
and along the summit through
to the top of Briddle Path. They
will then loop back to the top of
Rapaki Track before descending
Rapaki to the finish line at
Hansen Park.
“We recognised that there’s so
much potential there because we
have the crater rim trail track
which is already there and it’s
such an iconic view to see all the
different scenery from different
angles the whole way around,”
said event organiser Jamie
Hawker.
This year’s event is somewhat
of an experiment. From next
year, the event has hosting rights
A 16-STRONG team from
Sumner and a team of three
from Taylors Mistake travel to
Auckland this week for the 15th
annual Surf Life Saving New
Zealand pool championships.
The championships, which
start on Friday, will be the first
national event of the 2017/18 surf
lifesaving season. The event at Sir
Owen G Glenn National Aquatic
Centre, Albany, has attracted
entries from 687 athletes – 70
more than last year.
A total of 31 New Zealand
clubs have entered, along with a
team of 19 representing Surf Life
Saving Australia and another 12
from Surf Life Saving New South
from Athletics New Zealand
to call it the New Zealand trail
running championships.
“They are also going to use the
2018 event as a trial to assist with
the selection of the New Zealand
men’s and women’s team to
Wales. There will be about 400
races contested across age groups
from 10 years through to the
masters section.
Specific team events will
provide an opportunity for the
teams to go head-to-head in the
4x50m obstacle relay, 4x25m
manikin relay and 4x50 medley
relay.
“Unlike being out in the surf,
competitors can watch the action
more closely and clubs can
compete together and cheer
each other on in a stadium-like
environment,” said Surf Life Saving
New Zealand sport manager
Mike Lord.
“Many of our members spend
SPORTS
compete at the 2019 world trail
running championships,” said
Hawker.
“The potential for this is huge.
We can see the country’s top
runners and a large number of
internationals competing in the
Sumner, Taylors Mistake teams off to lifesaving pool champs
the cooler winter months training
for surf-based rescues in a
more controlled environment
and this is a great way to demonstrate
where they’re at ahead of
the new summer patrol season.”
Points will be allocated for
each individual and team race
and will then be added together
to show the top clubs.
WARMER WATERS: Sumner
and Taylors Mistake surf
lifesaving members will hit
the pool this weekend to take
on the country’s best.
BATTLE: Competitors will be tested by the Port Hills
undulating trails in all three races on Sunday. The 50km
ultra-marathon promises spectacular views of Mt Herbert
(above).
future.” The event also has 10km
and 21km distance races which
both start and finish at Hansen
Park.
There will also be two
children’s events at Hansen Park.
The inaugural ultra-marathon
has more than 60 entrants signed
up to compete, while the more
traditional 21km and 10km
events have close to 200.
The 50km event on Sunday
will also act as a build-up to the
60km Kepler Challenge through
Fiordland National Park in
December. The Kepler Challenge
has become the country’s
premier trail run and attracts
about 500 athletes, including a
large number of international
competitors.
The top runners in the 50km
ultra-marathon are expected to
finish in under five hours.
The event will be followed by
a presentation with place prizes,
spot prizes and a great morning
tea for all competitors.
HEALTH & BEAUTY
Love your dentures
Is it time to swap your generic denture appearance
for a beautiful, natural looking smile?
Internationally renowned dental
technician Richard Greenlees,
PGDipCDTech (University of Otago) of
Lovebite is the person to call.
His special point of difference is
rebuilding what he calls the Oral
Architecture, the structure and shape of
a patient’s face that is often lost following
years of wearing dentures.
Lovebite dentures address problems
that can arise due to years of the patient
wearing incorrectly fitting or poorly
functioning dentures, such as poor
occlusion (the way the teeth come
together), aesthetics, function and
hygiene.
An intricate knowledge and
understanding of facial features allows
Richard to return facial tissues back to the
correct position, reform lips, and restore
beauty and confidence.
Richard provides a friendly, discreet
service and personally guides his patients
through the transformation process to
create teeth with small nuances in the
fabrication, colour and shape.
Carmen, a recent patient said in a
thank you letter to Richard, “I highly
recommend your craftsmanship to anyone
wanting a natural looking smile. Because
you do your work in front of your client,
one is able to see how meticulous and
dedicated you are to ending up with a top
class result. My dentures are amazing.
They look like one’s own natural teeth. So
much time, effort and energy went into
the end result. Simply the best.”
Richard’s patients have varying needs,
from full denture replacement, to first
time immediate dentures, implant
supported dentures and metal partial
dentures.
Since he started making teeth in
1980 Richard has travelled extensively,
accumulating vast knowledge through
training and working in Japan, and
running his own practice in the
prestigious Harley Street, London for 15
years. He continues to teach his world
leading techniques globally.
Richard also creates porcelain crowns
and veneers, working with like-minded
dental professionals.
A beautiful new Lovebite smile
resembles nature and reflects the patient’s
character. It boosts confidence and helps
patients to look and feel years younger.
AFTER
rejuvenation that can be achieved
with a Lovebite denture (right).
The patient’s facial structure and
shape have been restored, with her
beautiful new smile transforming
the way she looks and feels.
a young female patient
These stunning lovebite full upper and
Richard Greenlees at his Christchurch studio.
The combination of Richard’s skill, experience
(including 15 years in London’s prestigious
techniques allow him to create beautiful
bespoke false teeth that truly resemble those
in nature and reflect each patient’s individuality
LUTHER AND LLOYD:
TWO OUTRAGEOUS HERETICS?
SIX-WEEK COURSE
This year marks the 500th Anniversary of Martin Luther
nailing his thesis to the church in his German town of
Wittenberg (October 31). An action that unexpectedly
sparked the Reformation. This year also celebrates the
50th Anniversary of the heresy trial of Lloyd Geering
here in Aotearoa New Zealand. An event that was most
divisive for many of our churches.
This course will examine the huge impact of the two
men in their time, noting their significance for today.
Attention will be drawn to the different theological
perspectives involved.
Six-week course of 2 hour sessions
held on Thursday afternoons 2pm - 4pm
commencing on 19 October 2017
The course will be co-facilitated by Charles Manning and
Reverend Rodney Routledge. The course will draw on the
latest scholarship and will be interactive in format.
