THE WORST young 

offenders in the north-west 

suburbs are part of a police 

focus to get them back on 

the straight and narrow. 

The 10 youths targeted are 

responsible for burglaries, 

thefts, vandalism and graffiti, 

intimidation and other 

offending. 

The operation, codenamed 

Piper, is based 

at the Papanui police 

station and is aimed 

at giving them opportunities 

to break their 

cycle of crime. 

Piper is part of a 

wider focus throughout 

northern and eastern 

suburbs to reduce youth 

crime and as part of the 

national goal to reduce it 25 

per cent by June 2017. 

Acting Sergeant Nick 

Adcock said it was hoped 

the operation would enable 

the young offenders to break 

their ties with a potential 

life of crime. 

Operation Piper is named 

after the Pied Piper of Hamlin, 

a 14th-century German 

rat-catcher hired by a town 

to lure rats away with a 

magic pipe. 

Police want the 

example set with the 

first few offenders to 

have a luring effect on 

others to break their 

criminal ways. 

“The idea is to 

have a fluid list that 

is always changing 

as we engage with them 

to try to break the cycle of 

offending,” Acting Sergeant 

Adcock (left) said. 

Police will step up bail 

checks, follow up breaches 

of bail conditions and get 

out and about with at-risk 

youth to build relationships. 

“For lower level offenders 

towards the bottom of the 

list we will do all we can to 

get them back on the right 

path. Those towards the top 

will have similar opportunities 

but we will resort to traditional 

policing measures 

if they are not complying,” 

he said. 

Sociologist and gang 

expert Jarrod Gilbert said it 

was an “incredibly” positive 

move. 

“Recidivism rates in youth 

are really poor, so if this can 

reduce re-offending, which, 

in turn, will mean less 

victims and less expense, 

well that is the definition of 

win-win,” he said.

Concerns over traffic increase 


RESIDENTS NEAR a major 

Avonhead land development 

say a predicted 20,000 more 

vehicle movements a day could 

ruin their quality of life. 

The Avonhead Community 

Group says they are concerned 

about the “huge impact” traffic 

could have once a 24ha site on 

the corner of Memorial Ave and 

Russley Rd is developed. 

Traffic modelling completed 

by Memorial Ave Investments 

Ltd, the primary owner of the 

block being developed, showed 

an increase of 28,818 vehicles 

per day in the area. 

This was based on a 

supermarket, retail, offices and 

visitor accommodation being 

built. 

Those rates were reviewed by 

consultants on behalf of the city 

council and accepted as being 

appropriate for the site. 

It would add to the 16,098 

vehicles that already use 

Memorial Ave each day 

and 28,000 which use Russley 

Rd. 

“We support development 

but not at the sacrifice of our 

quality of life,” said Professor 

S.S Bagchi, Avonhead 

Community Group chairman.

The development is split into 

six sections, four owned by 

MAIL, one by McVicar Timber 

Group and the other by the 

Commodore Airport Hotel. 

Prof Bagchi said they did not 

want to be confrontational, 

but they had to protect their 

neighbourhood. 

He said the group will 

be watching carefully any 

applications for resources 

consent. 

“We will speak with city 

councillors, community board 

members, infrastructure, 

environment and transport 

committee members, or who 

ever to make our point,” he 

said. 

The section owned by 

McVicar Timber Group comes 

under the Runway Protection 

Act and is subject to strict 

conditions on what the land can 

be used for. 

The McVicar group contested 

the Act in the High Court on 

September 20, and a judge has 

reserved his decision until a 

later date.

SMALL FIRE 

Harewood firefighters attended a 

small fire in an oven in Bryndwr 

on Sunday. They arrived at about 

3.15pm and used a CO2 extinguisher. 

A fire spokesman said they were 

on-site for about 20 minutes dealing 

with the small fire. There were no 

injuries.

Issues that matter in the Waimairi Ward 

With voting in local elections coming to a close on October 8, Nor’West 

News is asking candidates their views on topical issues within the 

community. Three candidates live inside the ward and three do not. 

We asked what are the biggest issues residents in the Waimairi Ward 

have brought to the attention of the candidates while they’ve been 

campaigning? 

Raf Manji: Waimairi 

Ward city council 

candidate 

The two main issues in 

the ward are increased 

traffic movements and 

independent hearings panel decisions 

on land re-zoning. Both are 

connected, with the main traffic 

concerns focused on the Avonhead 

Rd connection to the proposed 

Memorial Ave Investments Ltd 

site, which has now been re-zoned 

for development. The community 

board will need to look closely at 

how to manage any increased traffic 

movements there. We are still 

waiting on the outcome of recent 

appeals over the independent hearings 

panel decision on the northwest 

review area. The community 

has put in a lot of work on these 

issues and is hopeful of a productive 

outcome. 

Elections 16 

Anthony Rimell: Waimairi Ward 

city council candidate 

Stewart Henry and I have been 

door-knocking in the ward for three 

months. We’ve heard about concerns 

over water quality, roading, and bus 

routes. However, the most significant issue 

raised in the ward has been the proposed 

industrial developments on Memorial Ave 

(the MAIL site) and on Hawthornden Rd 

(NWRA3). People have repeatedly identified 

the impact on traffic safety around schools, 

water quality and the ward’s infrastructure if 

these large scale industrial projects proceed 

unmodified. For me, these and similar large 

scale projects, need to be measured against 

three ‘goods’. Is it good for the environment, is 

it good for our city and is it good for our local 

community? As I’ve spoken to people in the 

ward, they have been fully supportive of my 

approach. For them, these projects meet none 

of these ‘goods tests’. If I’m elected, that’s a key 

view I’ll be raising at the city council table.

The Waimairi Ward in western Christchurch consists of the suburbs 

of Avonhead, Russley, Burnside and parts of Ilam. It is a mix of suburbs 

developed in the 1960s through to the present day and consists 

primarily of single family homes and semi-detached dwellings, surrounded 

by gardens. 

The biggest issues for residents of the Waimairi Ward are water quality and 

development of the rural-urban fringe. The area has long been popular with 

families due to its quality schools, parks and other facilities, and pleasant, safe 

environment. Any development within the ward must maintain its existing 

residential character. Keeping our aquifers free from contaminants is also 

important priority. The city council must work with Environment Canterbury, 

residents and developers to ensure our water is kept pristine.

Throughout the campaign, there 

have been two key issues raised 

with me. The first is the water 

quality and the reluctance to have it chlorinated. 

The feedback I’ve received has 

been overwhelmingly in favour of keeping 

our water chlorine-free, so it’s pleasing 

to see the city council work quickly to 

resolve this issue. The second is around 

the development of available land within 

our community. Resident concerns on 

this range from traffic and parking issues 

through to the impact on local amenities. 

I’ve said throughout this campaign, and 

most recently at the Avonhead Community 

Group’s public meeting, that my role 

is to represent your views, and work to 

ensure the city council protects our local 

interests.

To be factual, my interaction with 

residents during door-knocking 

and other meetings has shown 

that there are two principal issues. The first 

issue relates to re-zoning of land, specifically 

two land-blocks – NWRA area three 

block B and the so-called MAIL site, and 

all the related concerns of traffic, parking, 

noise, water supply and sewage, loss of 

tranquility, impact on house prices and so 

on. These aspects are discussed in detail 

on Avonhead Community Group’s website. 

The other more recent issue is about 

the potential risk to the water supply in 

north-west Christchurch, and whether 

it should be chemically-treated. This has 

gained prominence due to the happenings 

at Havelock North. The city council has 

decided to fast-track the planned upgrade 

of the water supply system, while continuing 

to test the water daily.

Toy library needs new home 


THE PAPANUI Toy Library 

may have to close if a new site 

isn’t found for it to relocate into. 

The well-used library is facing 

a bleak future after news that 

its current premises at 472 

Cranford St will be demolished 

by the end of the year due to 

earthquake damage. 

Once it receives the notice 

to vacate the site, which is 

privately-owned, it will have 

four weeks to clear the building. 

Secretary Natalie Sisson said 

finding a new premise that could 

house the toys for an affordable 

price is proving difficult. 

“It would be a great loss to 

the community, especially in 

these times where we provide 

an affordable option for families 

who cannot always afford 

toys for their children to learn 

through play,” she said. 

The service is used by about 

100 members. It has been in 

operation since 1993 and is 

open to parents on Wednesday 

evenings and Saturday 

mornings. 

Bishopdale resident Sean 

Clifford said his family use the 

library a lot and it is a great asset 

for the community. 

“We are able to come down and

get a few different toys every 

couple of weeks, which is good 

because the kids get bored of 

them quickly,” he said. 

“It would be a real shame if it 

was to close. Hopefully they can 

find somewhere to move to.” 

The city council has suggested 

the library could move into 

the former Bishopdale Plunket 

rooms in the Bishopdale Village 

Mall – but it needs earthquake 

repairs before it can be occupied. 

The Plunket rooms were 

closed in July 2013 due to 

earthquake damage. 

However, Ms Sisson said they 

will have to see if the space is 

suitable for their needs before 

they can commit. 

“They do require some 

earthquake repairs and it may 

be a bit small for us . . . we need 

about 100 sq m,” she said.

city council for some time. 

In September the city council 

turned off a controversial a 

“mosquito device” that was used 

to repel fighting youths who 

were intimidating library staff 

and visitors. 

It had been installed at the 

library in 2014 and emitted an 

irritating, high-pitched sound, 

audible only to children and 

teenagers, to deter loitering near 

the front door.

Promoting sustainability 

Looking 

after the 

environment 

is a key 

component 

now in high 

school’s and 

Rangi Ruru 

Girls’ School is no different. 

Principal Sandra Hastie 

writes this week’s opinion 

piece on what they are 

doing in the school to make 

them clean and green. 

The best way to predict the 

future is to design it. So said R. 

Buckminster Fuller, a renowned 

20th-century inventor and 

visionary born in Massachusetts 

in 1895. 

Mr Fuller dedicated his life to 

making the world work for all of 

humanity and now more than 

100 years later, we know a major 

part of that concept, is sustainability. 

In 2015, Rangi Ruru Girls’ 

School adopted a sustainability 

philosophy which has underpinned 

a number of key initiatives. 

It’s great coming up with 

ideas but the important part is 

putting them into practice, and 

continue to develop them. 

Art teacher Kate Rivers is our 

director of sustainability and she 

leads a team of staff and students 

in promoting sustainability within 

the school. 

Each year we appoint a student 

head of sustainability, a role 

taken up with gusto this year by 

Annelise Thompson. 

At the start of 2016, we initiated 

our waste management 

plan and use colour coded bins 

– green for compost, blue for 

reused, yellow for recycling and 

red for landfill. 

Six months on and we have 

reduced the amount of waste 

going to landfill by 56 per cent. 

We were previously producing 21 

cu m of waste a week, now we are 

down to eight. 

Sustainability is school-wide 

and everybody is involved and 

engaged. It’s about crossing the 

curriculum for the girls as well as 

integrating with our well-being 

programme. 

For example, our well-being 

focus in term three was on respect. 

There was much thoughtprovoking 

discussion in every 

class, about how we can respect 

the environment. 

The integration across the curriculum 

is seamless and our girls 

automatically start looking at 

how the topic of study relates to 

sustainability; it becomes second 

nature. 

We could not achieve all we 

do without our fabulous sustainability 

executive team.

motorists be charged 

for parking at Jellie Park 

Recreation and Sports 

Centre. They write 

Lee Richards, of Strowan – I 

would oppose the introduction 

of being charged for car parking 

at Jellie Park as I am a high user 

of this facility and riding my bike 

there is not feasible. 

As a parent of two boys who 

play water polo and swim and 

train at Jellie Park I already pay 

the city council a huge amount 

of money for the use of the only 

deep water pool in Christchurch. 

I am there several times a 

week dropping off, picking up 

and watching my children as late 

as 9.30pm sometimes. 

I wonder if Bridget Williams 

has considered this, does she 

have children who use the facility 

frequently, does she pay the 

exorbitant prices that the city 

council charge us because they 

can, because we have no other 

choice. 

My children swim up to 3km at 

a session I don’t think they need 

to bike ride on top of that, especially 

late at night. Why should 

we be penalised for driving our 

car, that is my choice. 

Yes, I agree parking is an issue, 

however, if they are prepared to 

let us park on the grass during 

the summer months why don’t 

they just turn the whole front in 

to car parking. I was unaware of 


the apparent public consultation 

on this, sure I try and park in the 

car park, however, if there are no 

parks available I park on the road 

and walk in, no big deal.

We don’t think people attending 

Jellie Park should have to pay for 

car parking. I am 77-years-old 

and attend aqua classes five days 

a week. 

Our classes are full of mainly 

older people who enjoy the pool 

and gym, some travel many 

kilometres to Jellie Park many 

recovering from surgery and the

– I am a regular user of Jellie 

Park, mostly in the mornings 

and on Saturday morning. 

I also sent a submission to the 

city council against the extension 

of the car park there. I am most 

certainly against any charges for 

the use of the car park. 

This is a fitness facility so why 

can’t people walk a short distance 

if they have to park on the street. 

If a patron is early enough for 

their particular session a car 

park can usually be found in 

close proximity. 

The real bottlenecks occur 

when there is a bulk booking for 

a length of time, which can be 

almost all day, such as a swim 

meet. These sessions usually 

commence quite early and 

completely fill available parking. 

Where bulk bookings are 

made with the expectation that 

parking for people and possible 

equipment is available charges 

for this is, I believe, appropriate. 

There is also the facility for elite 

sport at the rear of the complex 

and this too can cause a block. 

Most of the members would 

stay for approximately 1-1/12 

hours. Another point, paying 

for a parking spot does not 

automatically provide a parking 

space when it is wanted. The 

facility is popular but as other 

facilities are developed or fixed 

the patronage will drop as people 

will use facilities nearer their 

home. 

There appears to be ample 

parking between the hours of 

11.30am and 4pm.

– The car park at Jellie Park is

when a significant proportion of 

users are elderly pensioners who 

must use their cars to get there. 

Don’t penalise them for 

wanting to remain active in 

what is also an important social 

occasion for many. 

In actual fact, for parts of 

the day, they are possibly the 

significant revenue stream for 

the facility. I swim, with up to 

three of my elderly friends three 

to four weekday mornings each 

week. 

I drive from Sockburn, have 

angina, I am a pensioner and 

make the effort because it is 

important to me and affordable. 

Car parking has never been a 

problem. Let’s have a sensible 

and workable solution.

rider and walker I would not 

expect to be rewarded for being 

sensible about transport. On 

the other hand as a motorist 

I would expect parking to be 

free as it is at other city council 

facilities. 

However, I can see that 

charging for parking might 

force a few people to consider 

using other means of transport 

to and from Jellie Park. 

Whether parking is charged 

for or free the car park will get 

full at peak times so the “first in, 

first served” principle will apply 

and the overflow will make use 

of nearby streets.

closure of the Westpac 

bank will have a negative 

affect on businesses in the 

Bishopdale Village Mall.

a passion to see the north-west 

of our city thrive, this decision is 

a major blow. 

The impending closure of 

the Westpac branch at the 

Bishopdale Village Mall is of 

tremendous concern to me. 

Clearly, businesses need 

to make sound commercial 

decisions, but there is a deeper 

impact on local communities 

that needs to be weighed as well. 

It’s not just rural communities 

that suffer when banking services 

are withdrawn. Suburban centres 

suffer just as badly, as it draws 

people away from their local 

community. 

The city council needs to 

be proactive in supporting 

suburban shops. Christchurch 

is a city of villages, and walkable 

neighbourhood shops that knit 

our communities together.

Living the dream of telling stories 

Emily Burns, 23, of St Albans, has had a whirlwind 

year in musical theatre playing leading roles in 

Mary Poppins and the second wife of Argentine 

president, Eva Peron, in Showbiz Christchurch’s 

recent production of Evita. She spoke to Georgia 

O’Connor-Harding about those productions, her 

dream role, and her love for composer Andrew 

Lloyd Webber 

Tell me about what this year has 

been like for you? 

I have loved this year. It started 

off in the summer playing an 

alternative for Mary Poppins 

at The Court Theatre. Then I 

jumped straight into Mamma 

Mia! which was so much fun. 

All of these roles in shows are 

completely different. I am such 

a theatre nerd and love tackling 

every new role. Then I went to 

Invercargill and was hosted by 

the wonderful team down at 

Invercargill Musical Theatre and 

we put on Mary Poppins. It was 

magical to be able to have Mary 

myself . After that it was straight 

into Evita and now I am going 

to play the understudy of Elle 

Woods for Legally Blonde for the 

Court Theatre’s summer season 

and an ensemble role. It will be 

fun. chihuahuas, bull dogs and 

lots of pink. 

Do you have a favourite role 

you have played this year? 

Eva Peron definitely. She is just 

something else. The journey of 

her young self at 15 all the way 

through to her premature death 

at 33. I find her fascinating and 

I love the fact she was a real 

woman who made such an impact 

on these people’s lives and 

on Argentine history. It is one of 

those roles I feel extremely lucky 

to play. 

What do you think of Eva 

Peron as a person and the way 

she was portrayed in the show? 

It is interesting because 

obviously in history and audiences 

there is going to be divided 

opinion about her. But people 

always say she slept her way to 

the top but she didn’t sleep her 

way to stay at the top, you know, 

she did a lot of good for the poor 

descamisadoes. She managed to 

build hundreds of orphanages 

and schools, housing for people

who never had that kind of 

support before. She is incredibly 

stubborn and a determined 

woman that doesn’t back down. 

And I take it you are a huge 

fan of the composer of the show 

Andrew Lloyd Webber? 

Oh, he has just got such a way 

with music hasn’t he. Every time 

I do a show of his it just surprises 

me. There is so many hidden 

gems in the music score that are 

so powerful. I did Phantom of the 

Opera with Showbiz Christchurch 

last year and the first show 

I ever did was Joseph and the 

Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. 

Andrew Lloyd Webber shows are 

always a huge spectacle. 

You have done the big shows? 

LAWyerS 

Yes, and I especially love when 

Showbiz Christchurch does them 

because they have these stunning 

orchestras. There is something 

about live music. We go downstairs 

to warm-up in the pit 

and the orchestra is just slowly 

coming in and getting their 

instruments tuned. That is one 

of my favourite parts of the show 

because I love coming down 

with the musicians because we 

kind of live in separate worlds in 

the show. 

Looking at all the reviews 

in Evita, all the reviewers have 

had positive things to say about 

your performance. What do 

you think of it all? Did you feel 

like there was a bit of pressure? 

The reviews were extremely 

generous and so lovely. There 

was a bit of pressure. As soon 

as the show starts you have just 

got to forget everything else and 

focus and telling the story as 

truthfully as you can. It is knowing 

and trusting the work we put 

in at rehearsals. 

Would this be the most 

challenging role you have 

played? 

Yes, 100 per cent. First up 

the music is complex. It is 

verging on opera on the fact 

there isn’t much dialogue. So 

everything said is sung.

The composer has to 

do a lot of changing of the 

keys, time signatures and 

rhythms. It took me a long 

time to feel comfortable in 

that. On the technical side 

of things there are a lot of 

costume changes. There is 

that whole added element 

of am I going to make it 

out on stage fully clothed 

tonight and with the right 

wig on. 

When you first got into 

NASDA did you really 

think you would be able to 

make a full career out of 

performing? 

Oh, my gosh it was 

definitely a dream that 

felt very far away. It is just 

taking baby steps. Having 

the confidence in yourself 

and working hard. I 

never stop learning, I am 

constantly researching and 

practising.

play after doing big roles 

already? 

I would love to play 

the witch Elphaba in the 

musical Wicked one day.

What actually got you 

into theatre? 

It is funny. I love Walt 

Disney movies and ever 

since I could talk I would 

sit in front of the TV and 

say the words. I would 

watch TV so much I 

would say the words of the 

characters and sing all the 

songs. That was kind of and 

indicator to my parents 

they should probably get 

me some singing lessons 

so it is more pleasant for 

them. 

Tell me about what 

you like to do outside of 

theatre? 

Things I enjoy doing is 

I love food and cooking. 

I love going down to the 

Christchurch Farmers 

Market and stocking up 

on lots of fresh food. I am 

often making curries. I also 

love op-shopping. In the 

city there are lot of great 

op-shops. I love TV shows 

as well. There is some really 

high quality programmes 

coming up with some 

incredible acting. I see it as 

research-watching actors 

do what they do best. 

Is there anything you 

try to advocate through 

the performing arts? 

The more people come 

out and enjoy it. I know 

it is hard in this day and 

age to justify sometimes 

a ticket to these kind of 

shows. With the array of 

entertainment we have at 

our hands literally. I am 

thankful for the amount 

of people who come out to 

the theatre and enjoy live 

story-telling.

Rewarding kindness 

in the community 

Breens Intermediate spent term three looking for 

opportunities to “pay it forward” and recognise some of the 

good sorts in the local community. Pupils volunteered their 

time and skills to workplaces and community settings. Others 

went out and cleaned up the local community and gifted 

“random acts of kindness” to neighbours. Pupils invited “good 

sorts” in for an afternoon tea and presented them with projects 

which recognised the kindness they show towards others. The 

term finished with an afternoon tea and music performance 

for residents from Bethesda Retirement Home and an evening 

market with food and entertainment for the school and wider 

community.

completed the Otago Rail Trail 

last week. 

The challenging 152km bike 

ride follows the former route of 

the Otago Central Railway.

Kidsbase pupils from the 

north-west put on their design hats for a 

Legomania Day. The team from House of 

Bricks visited the Rangiora programme with 

more than 100,000 Lego pieces. Children 

were given challenges and themes to

School’s B grade water polo team 

have won their competition, 

booking a spot in the Canterbury 

Championships this month. 

They overcame Heaton Normal 

Intermediate A 3-2 in the final. 

Sport co-ordinator Olivia Gill 

said there was a bit of rebuilding 

to do with the team. 

“The boys have been fully 

committed to giving it their best 

shot and, with weekly trainings 

last term, we were able to see the 

great progress of the team,” she 

said. 

Past pupils Jake Rochford 

and Ryan Crosbie took over the 

coaching reins after a successful 

campaign last year. 

The squad will also compete in 

the South Island Championships 

at the end of October.

ST MARGARET’S College 

will look to return to netball’s 

top echelon at the New 

Zealand secondary schools’ 

championship in Upper Hutt 

this week. 

The school has become 

a regular at the national 

tournament. They finished 

second in 2014, but will be 

looking to bounce back this year 

after finishing outside the top 

eight in the 16-team competition 

last year. 

The team has been a dominant 

force in the local competition, 

winning their sixth straight 

Canterbury schools’ title in 

August. They then went on to 

finish fifth at the South Island 

tournament, which qualified 

them for nationals. 

Their final preparation ahead 

of the national championship 

included a three-day training 

camp last week, with the 

school holidays allowing them 

to dedicate the entire time to 

netball. 

St Margaret’s has a wealth of 

experience guiding the team. 

Former Silver Fern player and 

current New Zealand under-21 

coach Julie Seymour has joined 

the team’s coaching staff 

alongside long-time coach Helen

after recently winning their sixth straight Canterbury schools’

They will play South Island 

champion’s St Hilda’s Collegiate 

in pool play. St Margaret’s lost 

their previous meeting with

Palmerston North Girls’ High 

School in their pool. 

“It’s going to be really tough. 

The North Island teams always 

pose plenty of challenges. They 

seem to grow them bigger and 

stronger up there,” said Seymour.

Monique VanRooyen is 

a perfect example of how 

the Southern Institute of 

Technology (SIT) assists 

full time workers to move 

forward in their career. 

Working in 

administration at 

SIT for nine years, 

Monique jumped at the 

opportunity to upskill 

in her Administration 

Management career with 

the National Certificate 

in Project Management 

(Level 4) in June 2016. 

The 18-week blended 

delivery course not 

only offered the content 

she needed to take a 

step forward, but its 

flexible hours made both 

studying and working 

viable, she said. 

“The biggest benefit 

is being able to do the 

course outside of work 

hours and also the 

fact that lectures are 

fortnightly, which allows 

time to complete each 

assignment.” 

Though only half way 

through the Project 

Management certificate, 

she said it had already 

increased her confidence 

to talk in front of large 

groups and had given her

LeARNINg fIRST aid is not only a 

part of ensuring a safe work place, but also 

an integral part of our engagement with 

the wider community. We all learn the 

necessary skills to ensure that in times of 

emergency we are able to assist our work 

colleagues, but are we able to take these 

skills home, into the community or on to 

the sports field? 

Not all work places are the same and 

the injury risk for each place can be wide 

and variable. The office attended by 

administrators does not carry the same 

risk as those people working with heavy 

machinery, or perhaps at some distance 

from a regular ambulance service. It is 

therefore essential that you pick the right 

first aid course to suit all of your activities – 

both professional and social. 

Take, for example, an office worker who 

does not have a high risk work environment 

and whose concern might be to ensure 

that they can deal with minor cuts and 

superficial injuries, or the ability to perform 

effective CPR. These skills can be achieved 

on a course of eight hours duration and 

would generally fit into low to medium 

risk area. But take this same person on to 

a sports field either as a spectator or player 

when a higher level injury occurs. The eight 

hour course covering unit standards 6402 

and 6401 (or 26551 and 26552) does not 

cover head neck and spinal injuries, eye 

injuries, hypothermia and poisonings. 

The majority of injuries occur outside of 

the work place, in fact one in three injuries 

occurs in the home, making it the most 

common place for injuries to happen. 

New Zealand children are twice as likely 

to die through injury as children who live 

in Australia. They mostly die as a result 

of motor vehicles accidents or falls in the 

home. fatalities from leisure and sport are 

not far behind those in the workplace. 

The wider 12 hour course teaches the 

additional unit standard 6400 and provides 

a wide knowledge base for medium to high 

risk environments. This course covers many 

of the skills required to deal with the most 

common injuries, such as falls (which can 

result in head, neck and spinal injuries) and 

dealing with complex scenes such as motor 

vehicle accidents. 

If you are not sure on the course best 

suited to your needs, ask your accredited 

first aid training provider. They can explain 

the course content and give you options 

that will best suit your needs. Look beyond 

the workplace and consider your family and 

your location. Check that you have a good 

quality first aid kit that is up-to-date with 

replenished items, and that everyone knows 

where it is located.

(airport) side of Russley Road will be closed. 

While on the eastern side there will only be left

left in to Wairakei Road from Russley Road.

• To go north on State Highway 1 from Wairakei Road, turn 

left from Wairakei Road onto State Highway 1 and do a 

u-turn through the Memorial Avenue/Russley Road (SH1) 

intersection (or large roundabout at present). 

• If you are coming from the south on State Highway 1 

and want to access Wairakei Road, do a u-turn around 

the Harewood Road roundabout and then a left turn into 

Wairakei Road, or make a turn right at Memorial Avenue 

and use Roydvale Avenue. 

As part of the upgrade of Russley Road, these changes are 

necessary for traffic safety, as certain distances are needed 

for traffic merging on and off the main road/highway. 

Wairakei Road is too close to Memorial Ave for this to be 

possible. 

If you are travelling to/from the airport, please be 

aware of the new layout and allow 

EXTRA TRAVEL TIME as delays are possible.

connection to Scotland 

RANGI RURU Girls’ 

School delivered singing, 

dancing and colour with 

a healthy dose of fun at 

their annual clan singing 

competition before 

heading off on holiday. 

Dressed in clan colours, 

students competed 

to see which group 

performed the best song, 

choreographed to dance 

moves. 

“The only thing better 

than singing is more 

singing,” student Ella 

Fitzgerald said. 

Dunvegan Clan 

won this part of the 

competition with a 

stunning performance. 

They accumulated points 

that will go towards the 

final result at the end of 

the year. 

The 2015 Clan Trophy 

holders are Braemar, who 

won the title last year for 

the first time in 44 years. 

The performances were 

judged by two guest judges 

from Christ’s College and 

two members of staff from 

Rangi Ruru.

behind the clans is to form 

connections between year 

levels to foster community

“It’s fun, colourful and 

very, very loud,” she said.

to show their creativity 

through music and they 

really enjoy dressing up 

and working together 

and it is a great way to 

celebrate the end of a very 

busy term,” she said. 

The clans, led by two 

year 13 students, are made 

up of girls from across 

years 7 to 13. 

They were named after 

Scottish castles, including 

Balmoral, Braemar, 

Doune, Dunevegan, 

Glamis and Stirling, 

celebrating the school’s 

Presbyterian heritage. 

Trial an electric bike for free 

THE CITY council 

transport innovation 

fund has approved an 

eight-month project so 

commuters can trial an 

e-bike, for free, for two 

weeks. 

Transport policy planner 

Nick Lovett said the 

e-bike trial concept was 

one of three projects to 

win funding this year. 

Electric bikes are 

becoming increasingly 

popular with commuters. 

“People will be able to 

get an e-bike, on loan, 

for a free two-week trial. 

This project’s goal is to 

help you discover how an 

e-bike could be a mode of 

transport that’s right for 

you, without having you 

commit to buying one 

at the onset,” Mr Lovett 

said.

of an emerging 

transport technology we
