coaching reins after a successful
ST MARGARET’S College
will look to return to netball’s
top echelon at the New
Zealand secondary schools’
championship in Upper Hutt
this week.
The school has become
a regular at the national
tournament. They finished
second in 2014, but will be
looking to bounce back this year
after finishing outside the top
eight in the 16-team competition
last year.
The team has been a dominant
force in the local competition,
winning their sixth straight
Canterbury schools’ title in
August. They then went on to
finish fifth at the South Island
tournament, which qualified
them for nationals.
Their final preparation ahead
of the national championship
included a three-day training
camp last week, with the
school holidays allowing them
to dedicate the entire time to
netball.
St Margaret’s has a wealth of
experience guiding the team.
Former Silver Fern player and
current New Zealand under-21
coach Julie Seymour has joined
the team’s coaching staff
alongside long-time coach Helen
after recently winning their sixth straight Canterbury schools’
netball title.
They were also joined by
Canterbury Tactix defender Zoe
Walker at the camp.
“Julie comes with so much
experience and knowledge. We
also have Helen, who has been
my coach since I was a junior,
and getting Zoe to come in is just
really cool,” said St Margaret’s
captain Lily Marshall.
The girls’ face a tough draw in
Upper Hutt.
They will play South Island
champion’s St Hilda’s Collegiate
in pool play. St Margaret’s lost
their previous meeting with
St Hilda’s 40-44. They also
play St Kentigern College and
Palmerston North Girls’ High
School in their pool.
“It’s going to be really tough.
The North Island teams always
pose plenty of challenges. They
seem to grow them bigger and
stronger up there,” said Seymour.
St Andrew’s College will also
take part in the tournament,
Dad’s Army
This stage show brings to life
the original characters of the
TV Series of many years ago.
Both Directors – Rebecca
Wakelin (debut) and Craig
Hutchison have ensured that
from time of auditions through
to performances, the DAD’S
ARMY many of us remember
will be relived on stage.
With a very large cast, replica
weapons, military uniforms
(mainly provided by Christ’s
College), lots of the original
music and of course heaps of
fun and laughter – DAD’S ARMY.
