PLACARD: Murray Turley protested roadworks that are narrowing the entrance
to Grassmere St from Main North Rd.
Phil Day responds to
the story in Nor’West
News regarding
Murray Turley’s
protest over work
narrowing Grassmere
St and Main North Rd
for fear of creating a
traffic nightmare
A road from Grassmere
St to Rutland St would help
get traffic off Main North
Rd and out of Northlands.
Mothers complained
that traffic would endanger
their kids at Paparoa St
School, yet they persist
in getting their kids out
of cars on the road rather
than pedestrian side.
I saw the paint marks
on the ground at Grassmere
St and Main North
Rd corner and couldn’t
believe how narrow the
council intended to make
the road.
The paint lines are now
concrete and I predict
mayhem as I sometimes
need to drive a bus to and
from Ngaio Marsh.
With the new cycleway
running between car
parking and pavement, I
also envisage cyclists being
knocked off by passengers
opening their doors
while exiting cars as the
passenger, unlike drivers,
have no rear vision mirrors
to see cyclists coming
from behind on the
cycleway.
Why wasn’t the pathway
behind Tulloch Pl not
extended all the way past
Ngaio Marsh to Paparoa St
School and Rutland St?
