Merivale costume designer<br />
featuring at UK flower show<br />
AWARD-WINNING designs<br />
from Merivale costumier and<br />
artist Jenny Gillies will be one of<br />
the main attractions at a flower<br />
show in the United Kingdom.<br />
Ms Gillies has taken her<br />
Christchurch Connection exhibit<br />
to the Harrogate Spring Flower<br />
Show from Thursday to Sunday<br />
in Yorkshire.<br />
The exhibition will form a<br />
centrepiece within the show’s<br />
HortCouture theme, which also<br />
feature large-scale floral art<br />
displays paying tribute to Ralph<br />
Lauren, Chanel, Versace and<br />
Vivienne Westwood.<br />
“It’s an exciting opportunity<br />
not only to exhibit in Europe for<br />
the first time, but also to spread<br />
the word about our beautiful city<br />
and the rich culture visitors can<br />
expect to find when they visit<br />
us,” Ms Gillies said.<br />
Show director Nick Smith said<br />
he and his team were blown away<br />
by the stunning spectacle of Ms<br />
Gillies’ flower gowns.<br />
“They are a perfect fit for our<br />
spring HortCouture theme.<br />
We are looking forward to<br />
hearing the story of Jenny’s<br />
work and how the beautiful<br />
flowers and gardens of the city of<br />

Ms Gillies said she will be<br />
showing costumes that primarily<br />
showcase the bold fashion design<br />
elements which make her work<br />
so unique.<br />
She travelled to the UK on<br />
<strong>April</strong> 10 along with 14 boxes of<br />
carefully packed designs.<br />
Harrogate Spring Flower Show<br />
is the UK’s biggest and most<br />
prestigious independent flower<br />
show, attracting up to 60,000<br />
visitors and 1000 exhibitors.<br />
Top apprentice in final<br />
A BELFAST apprentice has<br />
added another notch to his tool<br />
belt after winning the regional<br />
section of the New Zealand<br />
Certified Builders Apprentice<br />
Challenge.<br />
Sam Scoon, along with seven<br />
other apprentices from across<br />
the region, donned their tool<br />
belts and safety gear for the test<br />
to build an outdoor table and<br />
bench seating.<br />
Mr Scoon, 20, worked under<br />
a fixed timeframe and the<br />
final product was judged on<br />
workmanship, skill and time<br />
management.<br />
The challenge tested the apprentices’<br />
attention to detail<br />
with carpentry joints not<br />
typically included in an outdoor<br />
furniture set.<br />

Canterbury’s apprentice<br />
challenge.<br />
Mr Scoon took home a Makita<br />
drill and driver combination kit<br />
and a $300 ITM gift voucher.<br />
He will represent Canterbury<br />
in the NZCB Apprentice Challenge<br />
final in Auckland at the<br />
end of May.<br />
