Sculpture consent sought
• By Fraser Walker-Pearce
A SCULPTURE of seven
godwits soaring above South
New Brighton may be able to go
ahead, after a land issue looks to
be resolved.
The sculpture, by Southshore’s
Bon Suter, was poised to go on
land near the Bridge St bridge
but the project nearly became
unstuck when no-one knew who
owned the land.
The city council thought it
was actually “no-man’s land” –
not capable of being owned by
anyone.
But now city council staff have
discovered that the small section
of land was deemed a road
reserve so it can give permission
for the sculpture to
proceed.
City councillor David
East (right) told the
Pegasus Post that the
city council is working
through the consenting
process.
“As long as we are at the outer
extremities of the road reserve
we should be able to get consent
there . . . at this stage we need
engineering concepts for foundations
required,” he said.
Cr East said he was “reasonably
confident” that as long as
the project was granted resource
consent, it would go ahead.
“When we have some
designs up and running
we can then look at consenting
issues
In May the South
Brighton Residents’
Association asked the
Burwood-Pegasus Community
Board to grant them
funds to complete the project
subject to them finding a site.
The idea was approved and
about $4000 granted for Ms
Suter to begin designing, with
a further $8000 to be allocated
when a location was found.
Residents’ association chairman
Hugo Kristinsson said
he was pleased to hear that it
looked as though the project
would go ahead.
Coastal Ward city councillor
David East said progress is now
being made.
Coastal-Burwood Community
Board chairwoman
Kim Money said the sculptures
would be “absolutely brilliant”
for the community.
“To have that will be such a
boost and really exciting for
the community . . . public art is
extremely important,” she said.
SCULPTURE PROGRESS: After
confusion over the ownership
of land near the Bridge St
bridge, progress is being made
on the installation of a godwits
sculpture.

Rawhiti School’s Dara O’Malley is one of
the favourites to take out the year 7 boy’s
title at this weekend’s South Island Primary
School Champs at North Beach. Dara
will face tough competition in the event
from North Canterbury’s Liam Heasley.
The event, in its 13th year, is run by the
North Wai Boardriders Club. The club is
expecting big numbers, with the inclusion
of a large team of surfers from Buller
Boardriders Club. As well as Westport there
will be competitors from North Canterbury,
Kaikoura and Dunedin.

DESK News.......................................3, 5
IT IS great to see the bureaucratic
red-tape surrounding a sculpture
of seven godwits looks to be
resolved finally.
The design by Bon Suter, who is
based in Southshore, looked great
soaring near the Bridge St bridge,
but the problem was regarding
whose land it was and how to get
permission.
It was starting to look grim
with fears that the land actually
belonged to “no man.” Fortunately
it looks like this will be
resolved.
With ratepayers forking out
about $800,000 on the two controversial
Sir Antony Gormley
statues, one in the Avon River
and the other at the Arts Centre,
it is great to see a local sculpture
taking the stage.
We should be supporting local
– whether it is artists, businesses
– wherever possible.

Swim club’s money problem
• By Fraser Walker-Pearce
THE QE II Swim Club is
struggling to stay afloat paying
$20,000 to hire the Christ’s
College school pool.
The club was moved out of
QE II Stadium
after the facility
sustained extensive
damage
in the February
22, 2011, earthquake.
Lawrence
Taylor
It has since
been shifted
around
temporary homes at city
council-owned facilities Jellie
Park Recreation and Sports
Centre, Graham Condon and
now Christ’s College.
The club has made
applications to both the
Coastal-Burwood and Papanui-
Innes community boards
asking for financial assistance
to pay a $20,000 a year charge
from Christ’s College to use its
facilities for 15 hours a week.
QE II Swim Club president
Lawrence Taylor said the
funds being granted by the
community boards meant “the
club keeps going.”
He said it’s either the funds
are granted or swimming fees
POOL FOR RENT: The cost of hiring the Christ’s College pool is the main cause of the QE II
Swim Club’s financial strife.
at the club are raised.
“Before the earthquake, we
were the top junior club in New
Zealand for two years in a row.
So we’ve been taken from that
level to how do we survive. It’d
be ideal to be self sufficient,
but at the moment, it’s just not
possible,” Mr Taylor said.
“We can’t expect our
swimmers to pay what it is
actually costing us to use the
pools, so we’re having to go to
outside sources to help. When
we get to go home (to QE II),
we’ll then be able to have the
feeder programmes up and
running and we won’t be under
too much financial stress,” he
said.
With a club membership of
around 100, he said another
problem the club faced was
room for all swimmers.
“The biggest issue our club
faces is swim space. There’s
just a lack of swim space in
the city at the moment. We’re
swimming out of [Christ’s
College] in the school term
and, in the school holidays,
we’re in Rawhiti School pool,”
he said.
In Brief
BROMLEY CEMETERY
The future of Bromley Cemetery
is still undecided. The cemetery is
at capacity and city council staff
have not undertaken any plans to
develop the site for further burials
or ash interments. City council
neighbourhood and sports parks
operations manager Al Hardy said
it does not mean that the site of
the old Sexton’s House cannot be
used in the future. He also said
adjacent cemeteries, Memorial Park
and Ruru Lawn, are still open and
have significant capacity for future
interments.

STOP BANKS UPDATE
The city council is hoping to start
upgrading stop banks south-east of
Bridge St, South New Brighton, early
next year. Head of strategic policy
Helen Beaumont said the type of
work has not been decided and city
council staff are still informing a
“small number of residents.” Wider
public notification will begin when
there is more information.

Rawhiti School Enrolment Scheme
In order to avoid overcrowding, or the likelihood
of overcrowding, the board of Rāwhiti School has
adopted an enrolment scheme, which has been
approved by the Ministry of Education.
Under this scheme, students will be enrolled if
they live within the home zone described below:
• From the intersection of Anzac Drive and
Frosts Road
• North on Frosts Road to Beach Road
• East on Beach Road to Marine Parade
• South on Marine Parade to Rodney Street
• West on Rodney Street to Union Street
• North on Union Street to Owles Terrace
• North West on Owles Terrace to New
Brighton Road
• North West on New Brighton Road to Anzac
Drive
• North on Anzac Drive to Frosts Road
The enrolment scheme may be viewed on our
website www.rawhiti.school.nz or at the school
office where copies of the scheme are also
available.
Applications for out of zone places are now
being invited for those students who will become
eligible for enrolment during the period January
30 –April 13th, 2017.
The deadline for receipt of applications for out of
zone places is December 7, 2016.
If a ballot for out of zone places is required, it
will be held on December 9, 2016. Parents will
be informed of the outcome of the ballot within
three school days of the ballot being held.
The board has determined that 5 places are likely
to be available for out of zone students in Term 1.
The school operates an approved special
programme for Te Tikanga Rua Reo (Level 2
Maori Medium) and expects that there will be
about 10 places available in the programme for
out of zone students next year.

Fire service staff
remain in quake
recovery mode
Fire risk management
officer Mark Thomas talks
about the fire service’s
duties in Kaikoura and
Waiau, as well as some
incidents in the city
It’s certainly very different
this time. Christchurch city is
back to normal and, for most
people, it’s business as usual.
But Waiau and Kaikoura are
definitely part of our fire region
and we have a considerable
number of staff on the ground
up there.
Our Regional Control Centre
remains open and operating
and local staff are picking up
heaps of overtime to cover the
absence of those working on the
earthquake.
So it’s a matter of juggling
normal work and quake work
for those of us doing both. The
up-side is that Christchurch has
not had a terribly busy week.
Car crashes were quite high,
however, including one at Ferry
Rd and Ensors Rd on Sunday
evening, in which 11 people
were hurt, nine requiring transport
to hospital.
As usual, animal rescues became
our responsibility with a
cat stuck in a fence in Waltham
last Friday and a dog stuck
down a cliff in Dyers Pass Rd on
Monday.
In both cases, firefighters
were rewarded for their efforts
by the victims immediately
bolting once back on flat
ground. Ungrateful, but not
unexpected, I suppose.
A classic kitchen fire was
averted by luck in Sydenham on
Saturday, when a shift worker
returned home very late, put
food on to cook and promptly
fell asleep on the couch.
A smoke alarm did its job and
only smoke damage occurred.
Without the smoke alarm? Well
who knows? Tired or tiddly going
home to cook is not recommended.
Indulge yourself, buy
takeaways.
Readers respond to a
Pegasus Post article about
the problems experienced
by coastal residents during
the tsunami evacuation
Brian Ward, of Richmond
– A (s)hell of an idea for coastal
tsunami evacuation. The recent
unsuccessful attempt at a tsunami
warning and evacuation
along the east coast of the South
Island triggered two thoughts:
One, remembering the devastating
tsunami in Japan in March
2011, and the other, Christchurch
needs an evacuation plan for
those near the sea. I recall that
after the Japan tsunami, most
people took to their cars only to
get blocked in traffic queues with
the fatal consequence of being
caught in the incoming water.
People I have spoken to from the
New Brighton area had similar
difficulties in the hours after the
recent warning and, if water had
decided to make itself present,
then the likely outcome would
have been similarly disastrous.
In thinking about a possible
evacuation plan, I thought of a
method of providing a local safe
haven from the incoming water
and, at the same time, provide a
unique (or at least world-leading)
tourist attraction and a feature
that could become iconic and
offer a visual display of resilience.
For those who live near the main
exit roads, these roads would be
their evacuation route. For others,
their route would be towards
a few strategically placed giant
sea-shells built so that pedestrians
can walk or run up a wide
spiral footpath to safety. I attach
a picture (above) to give some
idea of what may be possible. The
spiral paths could be internal or
external and be a viewing facility
all year around.
Audrey Smith, of South
New Brighton – What I would
really like would be for an
‘expert’ in tsunami matters to
definitively state that Pegasus Bay
could be subject to a tsunami.
Has there ever been any evidence
of this in the past? I have lived in
the area all my life and all I have
ever experienced or heard of were
high tides. Some facts would be
helpful.
Anne Marchant – I would
like two points considered –
congestion was not always where
predicted, and a lot of people,
even those who were awake,
didn’t anticipate a tsunami
warning, Firstly, coming from
Southshore rather late, I found
the congestion was in Estuary
Rd, caused by half-asleep people
getting muddled at the Bridge
St roundabout. Making this
roundabout two-lane would be
cheaper than adding a bridge.
At the bridge, there was no
congestion and no apparent
traffic control. Secondly, we felt
a long, slow, rolling motion like
the aftershocks of Inangahua
in ‘68. We thought (correctly)
‘biggish one, far away.’ At this
stage, the Seddon/Cook Strait
connection had not been picked
up. We thought: ‘Well inland, no
tsunami, back to bed.’ Had we
got online too soon before the
Cook Strait half of the quake had
been recognised? The point is – if
every time one evacuates when
one feels a shake that goes on a
long time it would be ridiculous
and wasteful.

New Zealand Broadcasting

Ms Mulipola said they decided
to create the web series covering

“He said he thought the
school’s history was being wiped

Youngsters set to make waves
SOME OF the country’s best
young surfers will descend on
North Beach on Saturday for the
South Island Primary School
Champs.
A number of local surfers are
among the favourites for the
event with Chisnallwood Intermediate’s
Jai Oakley and Myka
Black from New Brighton Catholic
School the two hot favourites
for the year 8 title.
Oakley is the reigning champ
but Black has been performing
strongly on the NZ Grom Series.
Another surfer to watch out for
is the ever-improving James
Millar also from New Brighton
Catholic.
Another local will fancy her
chances in the year 7 and 8 girls’
competition when Chisnallwood’s
Lily Robertson continues
her battle with Sumner School’s
Ava Henderson. Henderson won
the recent Canterbury Primary
School Championships but Robertson
got one over her North
Wai teammate at the Duke Festival
of Surfing back in March.
In the year 7 boys, the favourites
look to be Broomfield
School’s Liam Heasley and Dara
O’Malley from Rawhiti School.
The year 6 and under boys
(normally the biggest division)
will be a battle between two
Northside Boardrider teammates
Jack McKenzie (Pegasus Bay
School) and Campbell Heasley
(Broomfield). Heasley, the current
New Zealand year 6 champion,
will be looking to assert
his dominance in this division.
Don’t discount two Rawhiti

schoolmates, Tom Robertson
and Mateo Bec, to take one of
the top seeds out. Jack Tyro from
Sumner could also throw a cat
amongst the pigeons.
The event, in its 13th year, is
run by the North Wai Boardriders
Club.
This year the club is expecting
big numbers, with the inclusion
of a large team of surfers from
Buller Boardriders Club. As well
as Westport, there will be competitors
from North Canterbury,
Kaikoura and Dunedin.
Due to the recent upheaval in
Kaikoura, North Wai has offered
free entry and accommodation
to any competitors travelling
from that area.
The inclusion of 10 West Coast
surfers puts a whole new twist on
the competition.
SPORTS

will look to push for a medal placing.

competition.
Pupils benefit from new sports field donation
LINWOOD NORTH and South
New Brighton are two of 11
primary schools in Canterbury
to have been gifted new sports
turfs.
SKY Television has gifted
the turfs to schools that lost or
incurred significant damage
to playing fields in the earthquakes.
Worth almost $20,000 each,
the turfs are part of the company’s
$1 million, five-year commitment
to help repair the city.
SKY director of corporate
communication Kirsty Way said
the turfs would make a big difference
to the schools.
“It is very important for children
to be active and outdoors
and Sport Canterbury can use
these turfs to help develop new
programmes to increase sports
participation,” she said.
Sport Canterbury chief
executive Julyan Falloon said
the donation will allow his
organisation to deliver new
activities to the mostly lowdecile
schools.
“A number of schools lost
their outdoor play areas in
the earthquakes. In addition,
population shifts meant some
schools saw their decile rating
change, which meant they lost
funding, while others had an
influx of pupils, resulting in new
buildings taking up space on the
playing fields,” said Falloon.
The other schools who
received turfs were Wharenui,
Riccarton, Northcote, Waltham,
Bishopdale, Papanui, Hornby,
Rolleston and Kaiapoi Borough.
SKY’s $1 million commitment
to the Christchurch Earthquake
Appeal Trust saw it give
$200,000 to repair Garrick Park,
Woolston, in 2013.

Shops bursting with
festive gift ideas
The countdown to the big day is well underway, so making
up the Christmas gift list will now be a top priority… if you
haven’t already done so.
Finding those special gifts and stocking
fillers as well as the Christmas treats for
the table is so easy at our city’s malls and
shopping centres, where the shops are
bursting with festive merchandise.
Every woman likes to receive bodypampering
gifts, and there is a huge
selection of these priced to suit all budgets
at the many pharmacies and gift shops
around the city. Perfume is another
favourite and again there is a wide
selection to choose from, ranging from
exciting new releases to the well-known
fragrances that have stood the test of time.
Lingerie, jewellery, fashion accessories,
homewares and decor items – there’s no
end to the ideas for the women on the list.
The men are equally well catered for, from
the sophisticated metro-male boyfriends,
to the car-crazy brothers and the DIY
enthusiast and keen gardener husbands
and dads. Choose from clothing, books,
tools, personal grooming items and
gadgets to put a smile on their face on
Christmas morning.
Speaking of smiles, nothing gives families
more joy than seeing the excitement
of the children opening their presents.
Whether they are delivered by Santa or
snuck under the tree by mum and dad,
the cuddly toys, games, dolls and building
blocks, the candy canes, toy trucks and
pretty dresses currently filling the shops
will bring squeals of sheer happiness from
the smallest family members.
The tweens and teens usually have their
own ideas about what they want for
Christmas, so the gift cards offered by a
wide range of retailers are the perfect way
to please.

Here’s how you can take advantage of this great offer…
Pick up your phone and dial 383 0307.Then press 2 and tell James or Moon in the Pro-shop that you are
calling about the Green-Fee Package in the paper and you want to book a tee time for 2 players. Tee times
for Saturday aren’t always available but for most other days you will be able to get the tee time you want.
Here’s what to do on the day you are playing…
Cut this ad out of the paper and hand it in at the Pro-shop at least 15 minutes before your tee time. In return
we will give you the key to a motorised cart and a voucher for 2 free handles of beer to be enjoyed after
the game. Then hop in the cart and go and enjoy the best greens and fairways in Christchurch (some of the
pros who played in our recent Pro-am reckoned they were the best greens and fairways in NZ).
Here’s what to do after the game…
Throw your clubs in the car and return the cart to the Pro-shop. Then claim your free beers at the bar. If you
don’t like beer - no worries. Just ask for a cup of coffee or a glass of wine instead. Then relax on the deck
after a great day’s golf.
That’s it, just pick up that phone and make the call…. 383 0307.

Creative wrapping
adds intrigue to gifts
Most of the malls offer a free gift-wrapping service, which
is a great help at this busy time, but for those who prefer
to wrap their own here are a few ideas to make gifts look
unique and exciting.
The first tip to make the job easier and
the wrapping look more professional is to
do the task on a flat surface – a table or a
hard floor.
Recycling has become an important
aspect of modern-day life, and that’s easy
to do with gift-wrapping. For example,
those brown paper bags you have put
aside are ideal, especially for odd-shaped
gifts. To give them a Christmassy look,
you could glue on those left-over pieces
of wrapping paper from last year that are
too small to use, and add a candy cane or
chocolate with the gift tag.
Another quirky idea is to wrap your gifts
in fabric. You could cut up a garment you
no longer wear, or look out those left over
pieces from curtains or clothing you have
made. Tie them up with fabric ribbon to
complete the look.
in Pegasus Post
Using newspaper or cardboard boxes as
wrapping is another recycling idea, and
you could add a festive look by tying
them with Christmas ribbon.
For long-shaped gifts, why not wrap them
to look like a Christmas cracker. Place a
tube of cardboard around the item, then
put it inside a sheet of wrapping paper,
secure it with tape then scrunch up the
ends like a cracker and tie them off with
coloured ribbon.
Kitchen foil is another wrapping option.
Being silver and shiny it already has a
festive look, which you could enhance
with bright-coloured ribbon.
Make a container, such as a jar, tin or
tray one part of the gift. Complete it with
chocolates, nuts or biscuits and wrap the
gift in clear cellophane tied with brightcoloured
ribbon.

Experts restore that
“winning smile”
MEETING PEOPLE for the first time,
interacting with others on social occasions,
going for a job interview - in all these
situations your smile is the most important
part of you.
Or perhaps, on a lighter note, you
might be scaring yourself with your ‘selfie’
because your smile is not as attractive as it
should be, due to missing or broken teeth.
Perhaps it’s time for a visit to Denture
South in Barrington, where the experts can
give you that winning smile back.
Clinical dental technician, Andrew
Johnson and associate Janice ling can
provide you with a highly personalised
experience. We have a lot of knowledge
and experience that can help guide you
through the process.
For people who have had dentures for a
while and are finding they frequently need
to buy denture adhesive to keep them in
place, Andrew advises having the dentures
relined so they will fit better. As he points
out, the money spent on denture adhesive
over 12 months would easily cover the cost
of having your dentures refitted.
Denture South has been providing a full
range of denture services for the residents
of Christchurch for over 13 years. These
services include first-time immediate
dentures, full replacement dentures, partial
plates and sports mouth-guards.
Many Denture South clients come
through word-of-mouth referral, an
indication of the level of satisfaction that’s
provided there. Coming into Christmas
we will be open and available for all
adjustments for our existing patients in the
final week, making for a great Christmas.
The friendly Denture South team.
Conveniently
located at 230
Barrington Street,
Denture South has
off-street parking.

Auction: Thursday 15 December - unless sold prior
4 bedrooms | 2 bathrooms | 2 toilets | 2 living rooms | 1 office/study | 3 car-garage | 4 off-street parks | Listing # PI45539
Those who love to entertain will be instantly
drawn to our feature listing, a substantial
family home located within the popular gated
area of Styx Mill Country Club.
Built just over a decade ago, this very
appealing home boasts four double bedrooms
(master with walk-in robe) and two superblyappointed
bathrooms, one of which includes
a spa bath.
Versatile, interconnecting living areas
provide the scope to host both intimate
gatherings and large get-togethers, while
the gourmet kitchen ensures the ability
to cater to any and every occasion. Other
highlights include a study, a separate laundry,
and an array of intelligent heating solutions
(including a gas fire, a heatpump, and
undertile heating).
Multiple sets of bi-folding doors provide
seamless access to the expansive section,
where sun-soaked patios offer plenty of space
for entertaining in the private and tranquil
fully-fenced grounds.
Triple, internal access garaging (with
double door access) and ample off-street
parking complete the appeal, while the
proximity to the Northwood Supa Centre
means every amenity you could ever need is
right on your doorstep.
The lifestyle on offer here is compelling, to
say the least, with numerous walkways and
reserves all within easy reach. In addition,
the sale includes membership to the Styx Mill
Country Club, where you’ll find everything
from an indoor pool, spa and sauna to
outdoor tennis courts and a gym!
Quality homes in this ever-popular
part of the city are always in demand, and
interested parties are advised to act quickly.
