The signification <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se forms is not merely passive,<br />
but sometimes reflexive or reciprocal; as +nn# ..... to oas<br />
aJ1 toge<strong>the</strong>r ; frequently, even in <strong>the</strong> sense <strong>of</strong>' ihe Greek<br />
middle voice ; e. -g. 'jqn ... b~ to get an advantage.<br />

Moods and Tenses.<br />
6. All <strong>the</strong>se conjugations have, in both active and pas-<br />
sive voices, <strong>the</strong> Praeter and Future tenses, <strong>the</strong> Infinitive<br />
and Imperative moods, and <strong>the</strong> Participle. The actives<br />
have two participles throughout. All <strong>the</strong>se arise out <strong>of</strong><br />
<strong>the</strong> ground-fom, mediately or immediately, by <strong>the</strong> inser-<br />
tion <strong>of</strong> formative letters, or by a different pronunciation <strong>of</strong><br />
<strong>the</strong> radicals, or by both toge<strong>the</strong>r. The different per-<br />
sons <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Praeter and Imperative are formed, as in He-<br />
brew, by sutfixes, and <strong>the</strong> Future by prefixes and suffixes,<br />
originally fragments <strong>of</strong> personal pronouns<br />
7. Verbs are ei<strong>the</strong>r regular or irregular. The former<br />
class includes all those verbs, <strong>the</strong> radicals <strong>of</strong> which re<br />
main unchanged throughout all <strong>the</strong>ir inflections ; <strong>the</strong> lat-<br />
ter, those which suffer a change or omission <strong>of</strong> one or<br />
two radicals.<br />
5 11. In&tion <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Regular Verb.<br />
1. M&t nearly connected with <strong>the</strong> Praeter stands <strong>the</strong><br />
Imperative, from which <strong>the</strong> future is derived. The Imperative<br />
<strong>of</strong> Peal is characterised by <strong>the</strong> vowel ,., those<br />
<strong>of</strong> Pael and Aphel are pronounced like <strong>the</strong> Praeter.<br />
