Volunteer work recognised
SHE EARNED IT: Spreydon teenager Storm Smith, 15, was
awarded the overall merit prize at the week-long Blue Light
Life Skills Camp held recently at Burnham Military Camp.
She beat a strong group of young people from the South
Island to take the prize which was presented to her by Blue
Light operations manager Mike Jackson. Blue Light coordinator
Amelia Adcock said camp staff felt Storm showed
a significant and consistent improvement in attitude, selfdiscipline,
self-confidence, participation and team work and
was always respectful to staff and fellow course members.
Blue Light runs the programme in partnership with police
and the New Zealand Defence Force. It is designed to
provide 14 to 17-year-olds with life-skills and leadership
training. ​
A TEAM that tackles graffiti
around their community
received a Community Service
Award recently.
Gavin Cameron, Wayne
Rissman, Mark Westaway and
Michael and Joan Rieschieck received
a group award for spending
their own time keeping their
communities free of graffiti. Even
buying their own paint.
The Spreydon-Heathcote Community
Board held the evening to
recognise members of the community
who donate their time to
help others or to look after their
local area.
Community board chairwoman
Karolin Potter said the
evening was a good chance to
recognise members of the community.
Individuals, youths and groups
received awards.
Graham Cook of Spreydon
received an award for volunteer
work with numerous charities.
Trisha Harrison was awarded
for her involvement with the
Edible School Garden at West
Spreydon School.
Addington residents Allan
Hudson and Eric Lilley were both
honoured for 20 years of volunteer
work in the community.
Helen Reddecliffe received an
award for being a member of and
looking after other members of
the Risingholme Orchestra for 11
years.
Shequille Ausage was given a
youth service award for volunteer
work. He spends 20 hours a week
after school helping other pupils
at numerous schools as well as
working with trusts.
Sofie Hampton of Somerfield
is a member of the Christchurch
Youth Council and she helped
establish the Spreydon-Heathcote
Youth Community Board.
Beverly Spencer received a
youth service award for her
volunteer work with Canterbury
Kids Coach and spending hours
volunteering around Hoon Hay
and Rowley.
