Volunteer work recognised<br />

SHE EARNED IT: Spreydon teenager Storm Smith, 15, was<br />

awarded the overall merit prize at the week-long Blue Light<br />

Life Skills Camp held recently at Burnham Military Camp.<br />

She beat a strong group of young people from the South<br />

Island to take the prize which was presented to her by Blue<br />

Light operations manager Mike Jackson. Blue Light coordinator<br />

Amelia Adcock said camp staff felt Storm showed<br />

a significant and consistent improvement in attitude, selfdiscipline,<br />

self-confidence, participation and team work and<br />

was always respectful to staff and fellow course members.<br />

Blue Light runs the programme in partnership with police<br />

and the New Zealand Defence Force. It is designed to<br />

provide 14 to 17-year-olds with life-skills and leadership<br />

training. ​<br />

A TEAM that tackles graffiti<br />

around their community<br />

received a Community Service<br />

Award recently.<br />

Gavin Cameron, Wayne<br />

Rissman, Mark Westaway and<br />

Michael and Joan Rieschieck received<br />

a group award for spending<br />

their own time keeping their<br />

communities free of graffiti. Even<br />

buying their own paint.<br />

The Spreydon-Heathcote Community<br />

Board held the evening to<br />

recognise members of the community<br />

who donate their time to<br />

help others or to look after their<br />

local area.<br />

Community board chairwoman<br />

Karolin Potter said the<br />

evening was a good chance to<br />

recognise members of the community.<br />

Individuals, youths and groups<br />

received awards.<br />

Graham Cook of Spreydon<br />

received an award for volunteer<br />

work with numerous charities.<br />

Trisha Harrison was awarded<br />

for her involvement with the<br />

Edible School Garden at West<br />

Spreydon School.<br />

Addington residents Allan<br />

Hudson and Eric Lilley were both<br />

honoured for 20 years of volunteer<br />

work in the community.<br />

Helen Reddecliffe received an<br />

award for being a member of and<br />

looking after other members of<br />

the Risingholme Orchestra for 11<br />

years.<br />

Shequille Ausage was given a<br />

youth service award for volunteer<br />

work. He spends 20 hours a week<br />

after school helping other pupils<br />

at numerous schools as well as<br />

working with trusts.<br />

Sofie Hampton of Somerfield<br />

is a member of the Christchurch<br />

Youth Council and she helped<br />

establish the Spreydon-Heathcote<br />

Youth Community Board.<br />

Beverly Spencer received a<br />

youth service award for her<br />

volunteer work with Canterbury<br />

Kids Coach and spending hours<br />

volunteering around Hoon Hay<br />

and Rowley.<br />
