Call for city climbing walls
• By Tom Doudney
TEMPORARY artificial rock
climbing environments could
occupy vacant land in the
Spreydon-Heathcote Ward if a St
Martins man can get backing for
his idea.
Chris Brown, a height safety
technician and keen rock climber,
will present his proposal to the
community board on Friday in a
bid to gain support.
If the idea was adopted and
proved a success in the ward, he
hoped it would then become a
city-wide initiative.
Mr Brown said a lot of rock
climbing areas around Christchurch
and Canterbury had been
closed off as result of the earthquakes.
“What that has done is made a
lot of the climbing spots you can
get to quite busy and congested,
and so everyone starts going back
to the indoor gyms, which have
just gone and upped their costs
as well and everything is quite
crowded,” he said.
“So what we are trying to do is
bring back that sense of community,
give people a few more spots
they can climb and do a bit of
bouldering and also get the young
ones into it.”
Mr Brown said the structures
would cost between $15,000 and
$20,000 each and consist of movable
frames covered in shotcrete
to resemble a real boulder which
could be transferred from site to
site as needed.
He would like to see four or five
in rotation around the city.
“That’s not very unrealistic, especially
when we spend $800,000
on a bit of art sculpture in the
middle of the Avon,” Mr Brown
said.
The city council had two such
structures already built sitting in
storage. They had originally been
intended for another site which
was developed before they could
be utilised.
Spreydon-Heathcote Community
Board chairwoman Karolin
Potter said she found the idea very
interesting and looked forward to
discussing it further.
Mr Brown has already won the
backing of Port Hills MP Ruth
Dyson who said she thought it was
a great proposal.
In Brief
FAST FOOD OUTLETS
A bid to investigate new rules
limiting the ability of fast food
outlets to cluster around schools
and low income areas has been
backed by the Hagley-Ferrymead
Community Board. A group
including Linwood College,
Linwood Avenue School, parents,
Linwood Medical Centre and Port
Hills MP Ruth Dyson made a
deputation to the board last week,
asking for its support. The board
agreed to refer the matter to the
city council.
SUN CAUSES FIRE
A Hillmorton woman came
home from work to find a couch
cushion on fire. The fire was
started by the sun reflecting off
a mirror which was lying on the
couch in her Bidwell Pl house.
The woman threw the cushion
outside and called firefighters who
used her garden hose to douse it.
Addington Fire Brigade station
officer Nick Brown said it was
very lucky the woman had arrived
home before the fire could spread.
