Cottage relocation
plan ashionup for approval

CONCERNS THAT basing

park could attract anti-social
behaviour are misinformed, the

The Spreydon-Heathcote
Community Board will today
vote on whether to approve the
concept plan for the placement
of the Manuka Cottage facility
at Cornelius O’Connor Reserve,
in Harman St.
The proposal to locate the
cottage in the park received 72

submissions, of which 61 were
in favour, eight were against and
three were neutral.
The opposing submissions
highlighted concerns from
those living near the park that
the cottage’s activities would
bring increased crime and antisocial
behaviour from people

Cherylan Davies said the opposing
submissions contained a lot
of misinformation.
“Wherever we have been we
have actually gotten rid of antisocial
behaviour,” Ms Davies
said.

“There used to be a lot of drug
taking and drinking in Church
Square and there may be still
some from time to time but
Manuka Cottage staff, along
with any other agency that was
willing to work with us, we were
able to minimise that.”
Ms Davies said being based
at the church grounds had been
challenging in some ways as
some programmes had to be
cut because the building and
grounds weren’t suitable for
them.
The Cornelius O’Connor
Reserve had been identified
because it was a park that had
been under-utilised.
“To bring people into the park
it is a known fact that if you put
a community facility on, people
will come,” she said.
“We are a place where people
come and make connections in
their local community, join in
activities and groups, develop
new skills and it’s a social thing
as well. There are all sorts of
things that happen at Manuka
Cottage but it doesn’t attract
anti-social people.”

ADVENTURE PARK IDEAS
Children have been encouraged to
submit their ideas on a mountain
bike track for Christchurch
Adventure Park. The city council
is seeking design ideas for a
mountain bike pump track for the
park. A pump track is a circuit
track with small jumps that runs
in a loop. Children between
the age of five and 12 have been
invited to take part. Competition

SCHOOL SECURITY
CAMERAS
New security cameras at
Beckenham School are expected to
serve a dual purpose – addressing
concerns over the safety of bicycles
and scooters, and capturing time
lapse photographs of the school’s
upcoming rebuild. The cameras
will be able to be moved as the
building process progresses. The
rebuild is expected to start in
October.
OVEN FIRE
Firefighters were called to the
Breadman Bakery on Kingsley St,
Sydenham, on Sunday after a fire
started in an oven. The fire, which
started about noon, is believed to
have been caused by an electrical
fault. Staff managed to put out the
blaze before firefighters arrived.
