Stopping the firebugs
Fire Risk Management
Officer Mark Thomas writes
about people lighting fires
with no regard for the
consequences
Without going into details just
in case it encourages those that
think it’s cool or funny to light
fires, there was a skip set alight
this week at one of the city’s
newer attractions. The potential
was quite serious in a town where
re-building our heritage has been
a six-year journey that, so far, has
no end in sight.
The real message I want to
convey is that there are people in
our midst who will do this sort
of thing without regard for the
consequences and, in some cases,
will be well aware of the consequences
and hoping they occur.
Mostly they will take the easy
way. So things like skips and even
rubbish bins that are placed close
to a building with easy access in
the middle of the night are an
open invitation.
It’s not so difficult to overcome
this by locking compounds or
even merely by placing the skip
as far from your building as possible.
The heartache, the clean-up
and the rebuilding are all things
we’ve been through. We don’t
need it again.
Note to travellers: Most New
Zealand backpackers are protected
by smoke alarms that ring
right through the building to
get everybody out. So lighting
incense in your room is not recommended.
Particularly just on
midnight when most are asleep.
As happened in New Brighton
last Sunday.
HARD TURN: Fulton Hogan trucks have causing concerns for residents doing U-turns on
Ensors Rd.
Trucks get green light
to continue U-turns
•From page 1
Ms Davids said the community
board is trying to get more
traffic monitoring along the road
as well.
The community board approved
removing five car parks
outside of the quarry to improve
the safety of heavy vehicles entering
and existing the site.
The report said putting in
restrictions would stop unnecessary
traffic delays along Ensors
Rd due to trucks having to manoeuvre
around the parked cars
to be able to enter the site. The
report also said it would improve
visibility for the trucks as well.
Ms Davids said it was a shame
to lose the car parks but safety
for the truck drivers, pedestrians
and other road users was more
important.
Mr Hoskin said this would
ease some of their concerns and
losing some of the car parks was
a small price to pay.
The city council classifies
Ensors Rd as a major arterial
route, with ARA Institute of
Canterbury directly across the
road from the site with an average
of 21,500 vehicles using the
road per day.
Fulton Hogan reported an
average of 200 vehicles enter the
site per day, the majority being
heavy vehicles.
•HAVE YOUR SAY: Do you
think heavy vehicle truck
and trailers should be
allowed to make U-turns
on Ensors Rd? Send your
