Technology boost for pupils
THREE SCHOOLS in the
Southern View area took
advantage of a technology
workshop at St Margaret’s
College recently, learning how
to build robots and skills for the
future.
Pupils from Te Whanau
Tahi, Rowley Ave School and
Te Waka Unua came together
to experience robotics, 3D
design and printing, coding and
makerspace.
The aim of the event was
to provide pupils with an
opportunity to be exposed to
a range of technology projects
that allowed the development
of personal as well as technical
skills.
St Margaret’s wants to
provide ongoing workshops
and programmes for students
and teachers from other
Christchurch and Canterbury
schools.
Through their experience,
children have been given
OPAWA SCHOOL children
have created a book to welcome
other children to the city.
After learning about cultures
around the world they room 8
children put their minds to their
hometown and what makes it
special.
The result was a book of ideas
to welcome new children to the
city, aptly titled, Welcome to
LEARNING: Students take a turn programming robots to
move around the room.
the opportunity to develop
skills in problem-solving,
communication, teamwork,
creativity, spatial awareness,
perseverance, and fine motor
control.
Technical skills of design,
electronics, coding and
Christchurch.
Teacher Robyn Drummond
said the pupils never set out
to write a book, they had been
learning about their own and
cultures and what they thought
was important.
The book features a favourite
Christchurch experience by each
child, and a picture to illustrate
it. It is now in the city libraries.
continual testing of their
projects was also taught.
St Margaret’s College students
from year 6 to 10 supported and
facilitated workshops.
A school spokesperson said
their input to the event was
greatly appreciated.
