Businesses need more time
to assess car parking losses
• By Caitlin Miles
BUSINESS OWNERS will
have more time to make their
argument against removing 90
per cent of car parks along part
of Ferry Rd to make way for
cycleways.
The Heathcote Expressway
cycleway plan was put out for
consultation in November.
It showed a large amount of
parking would be removed
to build 2.1m-wide separated
cycleways on either side of the
road between Wilsons Rd and
Fitzgerald Ave.
The cycleway was planned to
run from Heathcote through
Ferrymead, Opawa and
Woolston then into the central
city.
Consultation was scheduled
to close on December 23, but
the city council opted to keep it
open due to concern from business
owners who didn’t feel they
had enough time to complete a
submission.
Carey Motors owner Tony
Carey said with the consultation
period being so close to Christmas,
he couldn’t give a submission
his full attention. The Ferry
NO PARKING: Car parking along part of Ferry Rd could be
reduced by 90 per cent to allow cycleways down the road.
The city council has released an artist’s impression of how
the area may look if the cycleway plan went ahead (inset).
Rd business owner also wanted
more information from the city
council about the plan.
City council asset planning
team leader Richard Holland
said it had decided to extend
the consultation so potentially
affected business owners could
get more information about
the plan before making their
submissions.
“A number of businesses
along Ferry Rd have requested
further information around the
proposed cycle route and the
impact on the on-street parking
along Ferry Rd,” he said.
Gentle Giant manager May
Shin said she was stunned when
the Heathcote Expressway
cycleway plan was released,
with details on the large amount
of parking which could be
removed.
She said the business relied
on the parking for people to be
able to quickly stop for coffee
and food. Removing those parks
would impact her business, she
said.
Mr Carey said he wanted
the city council to look at the
cycleway plan again and take
Ferry Rd out.
“After the earthquakes, business
around here is still getting
back on its feet, taking away all
this parking won’t help,” Mr
Carey said.
City councillor Yani Johanson
said he was glad the consultation
had been extended, as it
was important to give business
owners a chance to get more
information and put together
their thoughts on how the loss
of parking may effect them.
The plan also involves banning
right and left turns from
Ferry Rd to Fitzgerald Ave
heading south.
The city council has not yet
decided on a date for when
consultation will close.
In Brief
CENTRE IDEAS SOUGHT
From next week, the public
will be able to present the city
council with their ideas for the
Woolston Community Facility. The
suggestions will be collated before
a concept design is presented.
The facility will be built on the
demolished site of the Woolston
Community Library on Ferry Rd.
The library was demolished in June
2011 after being badly-damaged in
the earthquakes. The city council
has set aside $1.6 million in its
annual plan to replace it.
ROAD CLOSURE
Sparks Rd has been closed between
Sutherlands and Hendersons Rds
due to the installation of the Southeast
Halswell Wastewater Scheme.
The road is expected to be closed
until January 29 to allow for the
construction of a pump station at
270 Sparks Rd. A detour will be via
Hendersons and Halswell Rds or
via Cashmere Rd.
PLAQUE NAME UPDATE
The Linwood-Central-Heathcote
Community Board wants to update
a plaque on a piece of pounamu
which sits on the table during its
meetings. The plaque currently
contains the name of the former
Ferrymead-Heathcote Community
Board. City council staff are
looking at updating the old plaque
with the new board name.
