Businesses need more time<br />

to assess car parking losses<br />

BUSINESS OWNERS will<br />

have more time to make their<br />

argument against removing 90<br />

per cent of car parks along part<br />

of Ferry Rd to make way for<br />

cycleways.<br />

The Heathcote Expressway<br />

cycleway plan was put out for<br />

consultation in November.<br />

It showed a large amount of<br />

parking would be removed<br />

to build 2.1m-wide separated<br />

cycleways on either side of the<br />

road between Wilsons Rd and<br />

Fitzgerald Ave.<br />

The cycleway was planned to<br />

run from Heathcote through<br />

Ferrymead, Opawa and<br />

Woolston then into the central<br />

city.<br />

Consultation was scheduled<br />

to close on December 23, but<br />

the city council opted to keep it<br />

open due to concern from business<br />

owners who didn’t feel they<br />

had enough time to complete a<br />

submission.<br />

period being so close to Christmas,<br />

he couldn’t give a submission<br />

said it had decided to extend<br />

the consultation so potentially<br />

affected business owners could<br />

get more information about<br />

the plan before making their<br />

submissions.<br />

“A number of businesses<br />

along Ferry Rd have requested<br />

further information around the<br />

proposed cycle route and the<br />

impact on the on-street parking<br />

along Ferry Rd,” he said.<br />

Shin said she was stunned when<br />

the Heathcote Expressway<br />

cycleway plan was released,<br />

with details on the large amount<br />

of parking which could be<br />

removed.<br />

She said the business relied<br />

on the parking for people to be<br />

able to quickly stop for coffee<br />

and food. Removing those parks<br />

would impact her business, she<br />

said.<br />

Mr Carey said he wanted<br />

the city council to look at the<br />

cycleway plan again and take<br />

Ferry Rd out.<br />

“After the earthquakes, business<br />

around here is still getting<br />

back on its feet, taking away all<br />

this parking won’t help,” Mr<br />

Carey said.<br />

said he was glad the consultation<br />

had been extended, as it<br />

was important to give business<br />

owners a chance to get more<br />

information and put together<br />

their thoughts on how the loss<br />

of parking may effect them.<br />

The plan also involves banning<br />

right and left turns from<br />

Ferry Rd to Fitzgerald Ave<br />

heading south.<br />

The city council has not yet<br />

decided on a date for when<br />

consultation will close.<br />

CENTRE IDEAS SOUGHT<br />

From next week, the public<br />

will be able to present the city<br />

council with their ideas for the<br />

Woolston Community Facility. The<br />

suggestions will be collated before<br />

a concept design is presented.<br />

The facility will be built on the<br />

demolished site of the Woolston<br />

Community Library on Ferry Rd.<br />

The library was demolished in June<br />

2011 after being badly-damaged in<br />

the earthquakes. The city council<br />

has set aside $1.6 million in its<br />

annual plan to replace it.<br />

ROAD CLOSURE<br />

Sparks Rd has been closed between<br />

Sutherlands and Hendersons Rds<br />

due to the installation of the Southeast<br />

Halswell Wastewater Scheme.<br />

The road is expected to be closed<br />

until <strong>January</strong> 29 to allow for the<br />

construction of a pump station at<br />

270 Sparks Rd. A detour will be via<br />

Hendersons and Halswell Rds or<br />

via Cashmere Rd.<br />

PLAQUE NAME UPDATE<br />

The Linwood-Central-Heathcote<br />

Community Board wants to update<br />

a plaque on a piece of pounamu<br />

which sits on the table during its<br />

meetings. The plaque currently<br />

contains the name of the former<br />

Ferrymead-Heathcote Community<br />

Board. City council staff are<br />

looking at updating the old plaque<br />

with the new board name.<br />
