Stray cat Charlie leaves pawprint<br />

A STRAY cat, which has left<br />

a pawprint on the hearts of<br />

a Halswell couple, has an<br />

unlikely resemblance to one of<br />

silent film’s biggest stars.<br />

cat, has inspired a popular collection<br />

of bright feline-themed<br />

pots at the Halswell Community<br />

Market.<br />

The cat first began to make<br />

Nick Hawes, and his wife<br />

Pauline Dellow’s, house a daily<br />

pit-stop about a year ago – at a<br />

time when they were looking<br />

to pursue a creative hobby of<br />

their own.<br />

Sharing similar characteristics<br />

to a tramp, the couple<br />

of 38 years, named the stray<br />

after English comic actor Sir<br />

Charles Spencer, after they saw<br />

him play the role of The Tramp<br />

in the film of the same name.<br />

“The cat just reminded us<br />

of Charlie Chaplin and the<br />

little sad looking character<br />

that looked in the windows of<br />

shops,” Mr Hawes said.<br />

The couple, who had been<br />

working in the digital technology<br />

realm for more than 20<br />

years, decided they missed<br />

the fulfilment of illustrating<br />

designs from hand.<br />

“We needed to do something<br />

for ourselves which we could<br />

continue to go out and get a<br />

little bit arty with. Get back to<br />

our roots which is design a lot<br />

of handcraft work,” he said.<br />

Artistically stimulated by the<br />

cat Charlie Chaplin, the couple<br />

made an overnight decision to<br />

set up their own creative hobbies<br />

Cats in Your Face, building<br />

up a popular following<br />

both within the community<br />

and on their Facebook page.<br />

Mr Hawes describes the face<br />

of their hobbies as a “grownup<br />

not to be cuddled” and a<br />

cat who “does his own thing.”<br />

“He comes when he wants to<br />

come and thanks us by hissing<br />

at us . . . he adopted us,” he said.<br />

A year later the cat-themed<br />

pots are in demand with<br />

orders coming from places including<br />

Invercargill, Dunedin<br />

and Ashburton.<br />

With a strong love for cats,<br />

the couple regularly give part<br />

of their proceeds to the Cats<br />

Protection League Canterbury<br />

based in Linwood.<br />

Mr Hawes has been a<br />

creative director of his own<br />

advertising and marketing<br />

business Yellow Pencil for<br />

more than 34 years.<br />

“When we started everything<br />

was done by hand. We used<br />

pens and paper. Everything was<br />

an art and has developed into<br />

digital technology,” he said.<br />

But he said while he and his<br />

wife found a “mutual enjoyment”<br />

in hand-painting pots,<br />

he would not wish to go back<br />

to the technology of three<br />

decades ago.<br />
