University basketball<br />
team take close win<br />
The Canterbury University men’s premier<br />
basketball team played a “nail biter”<br />
against the Gators in the third game<br />
of the season – winning by just a point.<br />
The game held at Cowles Stadium on<br />
Saturday saw the university team win<br />
65-64.<br />
Top scorers in the game from university<br />
were Brent Fisher, 19, Josh Petermann,<br />
13, and Justin Kent, 10.<br />
Scorers from the Gators included Inga<br />
Solofuti, 17, and Jeremy Kench,15.<br />
Canterbury University President/<br />
Men’s Coach Piet Van Hasselt said the<br />
men’s game was a “real nail-biter”.<br />
“One of our guys hit a shot from 75<br />
feet at the end of the first quarter,” he<br />
said.<br />
The Canterbury University’s Women’s<br />
team lost their first game of the season<br />
to team Minties 67-51.<br />
Minties’ Jess Rathgen scored 17<br />
points while Anita Snowdon scored 15<br />
while Canterbury University’s Sapphire<br />
Wairau 10, while Bianca Aguiar scored<br />
nine.<br />
Meanwhile, in August, the American<br />
team Athlete’s in Action will visit to play<br />
a collection of teams in New Zealand for<br />
two weeks including Canterbury University.<br />
The team will be touring New Zealand<br />
for two weeks.<br />
Canterbury University basketball is<br />
also preparing for the National Tertiary<br />
Championship with tertiary teams from<br />
all around the country playing each other<br />
in the city.<br />
