For Canterbury people, the name Musgroves is synonymous
with recycled and pre-loved building materials and household
items that can happily find a place in their new or renovated
home.
Founded by Dave Musgrove in 1942 as a general cartage
company, it became Musgrove Bros when Dave was joined by
his brother Alf in 1946. The business operated as a cartage and
road contracting company until 1970.
The previous year, when the management was taken over by
Graeme Vickers, the company’s work had extended to include
demolition and the sale of recycled materials. Demolition
continued for a number of years, before Musgroves began to
specialise in buying and selling recycled building materials.
Since those early days, the product mix has evolved, and there
are now many different types of product carried by Musgroves,
general manager Sue Brown says. Volume has expanded significantly
too, with some 70,000 items now on the yard at any
one time, including new and pre-used.
For Musgroves, re-purposing products is at the heart of their
philosophy, Sue says.
“We’re here to help people with their renovations. Many of
our items are materials left over from building jobs, such as
insulation, roofing iron, trellis etc.
“The pre-used items people bring in include items such as
doors, ranchsliders, windows, and kitchen units. And there is a
huge selection for customers to browse through.”
Of course there are the special treasures, too. One Sue is particularly
thrilled with is a series of large oak ceiling panels, each
in four sections, which came from an architecturally designed
home, and lay unused for seven years before they were taken
to Musgroves.
Another unusual item is a large, four-door oak entertainment
cabinet, which Sue says could be an eye-catching feature piece
in someone’s new or renovated home.
People renovating older properties often need to match existing
items that are no longer being manufactured, a problem
that can often be solved at Musgroves. They have Pinex ceiling
tiles, for example, and clay roof tiles, most of which are now
not available on the market.
Those building new homes and wanting to add character to a
contemporary design may choose to install tongue and groove
flooring made from recycled timber, or use old door and cupboard
handles or locks, Sue says.
With new building products continually being developed and
replacing existing ones, the range at Musgroves is constantly
changing and growing. One example, says Sue, is ACM (aluminium
composite) panels, which are waterproof so are ideal
for bathrooms and create a unique effect.
