This year the school is celebrating its 60th anniversary, and next year will mark the first step of a major change. In January 2018, the school will be given a new name – Wigram Primary, and this will be in preparation for the school’s relocation to the Wigram Primary site on the Runway in January 2019, principal Heather Walkinshaw says. Detailed design of the new school is currently underway, with construction to be carried out by Southbase. “Southbase has had recent experience with new school builds, and will bring their expertise to the build,” Ms Walkinshaw says. “Work on the new school is expected to start in January 2018.” The new site was blessed by representatives of the local Taumutu Rununga on August 8, with the ceremony attended by the then Associate Minister of Education, Tim Macindoe. The school will also have a new uniform with a new logo, which is now being embroidered on to the new uniforms. The logo, which features two kahu facing each other with the runway through the middle, has been designed to represent the history of the area. These include visiting learning spaces, photos, afternoon tea and a dinner at the Wigram Base Conference Centre. “The school has always been well supported by the community, as one of our parents said recently: ‘The school has had a lot of long-serving staff, which is a reflection of the loyalty to the school. The school has a great sense of community. Everyone works very well together. The staff are dedicated to the success of all students.’” LOOKING BACK… The first headmaster of Sockburn Public School when it was established in1957 was Mr A. R. Chambers. A photo from the time shows there were 11 teachers, a clerical assistant and a nurse. An aerial view dated January 1957 shows how little development there was at both the airbase and in the surrounding area. The first school committee was formed in 1957 and the iconic school pool, which was opened in1961, is still used by the students. The Wigram Airbase families had a long connection with the school until Wigram Aerodrome was closed in 1995 following the CFS’ relocation to RNZAF Ohakeatwo years earlier. At that point Sockburn School roll dropped by about 80 students. Some school relocatable buildings were then removed to Hagley High. Gorgeous Food also offers delicious Vivace coffee, which is roasted in Christchurch, with Pete and Kayla the baristas. Supporting the community is important to Pete and Jo, and on August 18 they ran their annual Cupcake Fundraiser Day to support the SPCA, which is located nearby. All proceeds from the cupcake sales went to the organisation, with just over $500 being raised. Gorgeous Food can also cater for lunches, morning teas and afternoon teas, with the food being boxed up and ready for collection as required. Since last year, Gorgeous Food has been opening on Saturdays from 7am - 1.30pm, and this has proved very popular with their regular customers, Jo says. In driving through the park, there is a palpable sense of activity and momentum owing to the large number of sites currently under construction. “Waterloo reached its tipping point sometime in the past 12 months,” assistant development manager Joel Webber says, “where we gained a critical mass of sales and construction activity that marked a transition from large, burgeoning industrial subdivision to an active and dynamic business environment. “On the back of this transition, the focus of the development team at Waterloo has squarely shifted to completion of the two remaining stages of development,” Mr Webber says. “Titles for the 6.3ha Stage 5 of development are expected in mid to late October. Earthworks on the final stage of development, the 7.3ha Stage 6, is well underway with titles expected to issue in early 2018. “On the periphery of our own on-site works, we’re eagerly anticipating the completion of NZTA’s Pound Road realignment works towards the end of the year. This will be a key milestone in the ongoing evolution of Waterloo Business Park, delivering outstanding roading network connectivity to our owners and occupiers.” The freight and logistics fraternity has identified and acted upon this opportunity with several transport-based businesses having established in close proximity to this future arterial route. These businesses have futureproofed themselves over the medium to long term and are positioned well for growth and success, Mr Webber says. There are currently 14 businesses established and operating within the Business Park with a further 10 sites under construction. In recognition of the changing dynamics within the Business Park, Waterloo recently launched its inaugural owners and occupiers networking event. “We believe that Waterloo can be, and should be a business micro-community,” Mr Webber says. “We’ve seen first-hand the internal business opportunities that take shape when owners and occupiers at Waterloo Business Park get in the same room as one another. We want to encourage and nurture a strong business community at Waterloo and we see a regular networking event as a terrific way to foster and develop understanding of, and familiarity with, the other businesses on-site and promote internal business transactions within the Business Park.” The philosophy behind the regular networking events is that each quarter a different business hosts the event on site. The host business has the opportunity to give an overview of what they do and undertake a tour of their premises before breaking out into informal networking over drinks and nibbles. “Our inaugural networking event was hosted by Hagley Building Products back in June and was a resounding success.
