Selling almost everything from antiques to sporting and household items, Maudes on Trade Me allows customers to shop online in the comfort of their own home and raise money for the Nurse Maude Hospice at the same time. At any one time, Maudes has around 250 items up for auction, and almost every one of them starts at just $1 reserve with rare and collectable pieces soon reaching their optimum price. While the Nurse Maude Hospice shops sell fashion clothing and accessories Maudes on Trade Me sells almost everything else and buyers can come from anywhere in the country. With more than 200 items a week being listed, Maudes on Trade Me is very dependent on a steady stream of donated goods. “Please dive into your cupboards and garage for that unused sports equipment, jewellery, china, glass, silverware, furniture, whiteware - in fact pretty much anything in good saleable condition,” says Sue Bramwell, GM Marketing at Nurse Maude, “and we can turn it into the funds needed to provide hospice palliative care and support free of charge to patients and their families in the Nurse Maude Hospice.” If you need larger items or household lots collected then email trademe.volunteers@ nursemaude.org.nz or call them on 375 4643 to arrange pick up. Smaller items may be dropped off at any of the Nurse Maude Hospice shops around town seven days a week. “It’s a perfect way to support the Nurse Maude Hospice while giving your home its annual spring clean,” says Sue. News Dusting off the Elvis track for a good cause • By Emily O’Connell ELVIS WILL be in Hornby on Saturday to raise funds for poliomyelitis. The Rotary Club of Avonhead is putting on Another Great Variety Tribute Show to raise money for people suffering from poliomyelitis – a crippling and potentially deadly infectious disease. Organiser Graeme Wallis said the money raised from the show will go to PolioPlus, an initiative started by Rotary International. PolioPlus is helping immunise people in the hope of ending poliomyelitis worldwide. “It exists in five countries at the moment – Pakistan, Afghanistan, India, Nigeria and Syria – which spells out the word PAINS. It is diminishing rapidly but Rotary International have got some huge support, which means if we raise $5000 they will double it,” Mr Wallis said. The show will have music from Elvis Presley, Neil Diamond and John Rowles as well as dancing. Mr Wallis said the show is special because of how much support the community has given. He said this year was the first time the Rotary Club of Avonhead offered the musicians some money for their talents. “We made the decision that each player would get $100. Anyway, when I went up to them, immediately three of them said ‘oh no it’s alright, I don’t want anything,’” WESTERN NEWS BAND: The Viscounts Band members Neville Wilkins (trumpet), John Wilson (drums). Graeme Wallis (bass), Dave Petrie (keyboards), Chrissi Williams (vocals) and Ray Harris (guitar) will perform at Another Great Variety Tribute Show. Mr Wallis said. “I think the arts are incredibly important. There are a lot of people involved in the community in music. Sometimes they don’t get the recognition they should because they deserve better audiences,” Mr Wallis said. •Another Great Variety Tribute Show will be performed on Saturday at the Hornby Working Men’s Club. The boys went through their pool play unbeaten. They beat Timaru Boys in the quarter final 6-0, they went on to beat Rosehill College 2-1 in the semi-final and in the final triumphed over Hutt Valley High School 3-1. On Friday the 25th of August, a brave group of 20 students shaved their hair to raise funds as well as awareness for Leukaemia & Blood Cancer New Zealand. This organisation ensures all individuals and families who are sadly faced with Leukaemia & Blood Cancer are well supported. The Left to right: Akshat Goyal, Josiah Edwin, Ryan Worsley shave took place at lunchtime creating a supportive atmosphere with many students helping out. Large support from Burnside High School’s community saw the team raise over $5,900! A huge thanks goes to Hames Hairdressing, Gray Ryburn, Jess Cliffe and all the helpers for allowing this event to be a success! Burnside High School is looking forward to ‘Shave For a Cure’ 2018! Table Tennis Both our Boys and Girls Table Tennis teams competed this year in the NZ Secondary Schools Championships held in Palmerston North. The Boys won the Open A grade, beating Auckland Grammar in the final. The Girls won the Girls grade, beating Macleans College in the final. This is the first time our Table Tennis teams have attended the National tournament, and possibly the first time in the history of this tournament that one school has taken out both titles.
