MY PRIDE & JOY
SELWYN TIMES
A 2008 DODGE
CHALLENGER
Nev Croy has been a Chrysler fan
ever since his father, Wilfrid Croy and
Pat Keating owned the Sheffield garage
in the early 1950s through to the 1970s.
They were sub-dealers for Cooper
Henderson Motors, the Chrysler dealers
in Christchurch so Chrysler was the
family’s car of choice.
Nev has always owned a Chrysler
replacing his previous car, a valiant
Charger with a brand new 2008 Dodge
Challenger, which he imported from
the United States. It was the first left
hand drive vehicle of its kind that
arrived in New Zealand and car number
6,289 off the production line with only
6,400 produced in the first edition of
Challengers.
“Chrysler had not intended to produce
more Dodge Challengers but the car was
so popular that they carried on making
them. you can still buy a new model
today,” explains Nev.
The car is a five speed automatic, fully
equipped with a reconfigurable display
that shows the car’s g-force just like in an
aeroplane. The driver can set a timer to
calculate the 0-60 miles per hour time,
activated when putting the foot on the
accelerator so a handy feature for saloon
racing.
It has a response system that
automatically turns off the fuel supply
to the engine, turns on the lights and
unlocks the doors if the airbags are
triggered, as well as a tyre pressure
monitoring display button on the
dashboard that shows the pressure of
each tyre.
Under the bonnet is a 425 brake
horsepower 6.1 litre engine, claimed
to go from 0-100 miles per hour and
back to zero in just 16.5 seconds, and
0-60 miles per hour in 4.9 seconds. Nev
and his partner Heather Taege have
not quite reached that. When tested by
the manufacturers it reached 13.5 in
a standing quarter mile, however Nev
and Heather could not quite reach that
at the recent oamaru drag racing with
Nev achieving 13.8 seconds and Heather
tipping him at 13.7. english Top Gear
featured a SrT8 Challenger on their
programme which reached 155 miles per
hour on the Bonneville salt flat.
The car’s interior is beautifully fitted
out and has leather seating that Nev says
are heated and really comfortable.
“It’s a two door four seater so not
huge in the back though we have had
six foot passengers in there and as the
driver’s seat is electric and has a motor
underneath it, it is difficult to climb into
the back from that side,” explains Nev.
The vehicle also has a 320 AMP sound
system with hard drive that will store
1,200 tunes and play DvDs when in
neutral gear.
Nev’s best fuel consumption has been
8.8 litres per 100 kilometres though
on average he achieves 12-13 litres per
100 kilometres. He considers this quite
affordable and has found the Dodge
cheaper than his earlier valiant Charger.
Nev and Heather have travelled 33,000
kilometres in their 2008 Dodge Challenger.
“Every kilometre’s been immensely enjoyable.
We just love it,” says Nev.
