Water meter crackdown
THERE HAVE been 45
abatement notices and one
infringement notice issued in the
last two months to Canterbury
water consent holders who hadn’t
yet installed a required meter.
Environment Canterbury made
contact in May and June with the
500 water consent holders who
had not provided evidence they
had installed a water measuring
system.
Of these, 63 have since been
deemed fully compliant with
their consent conditions and the
national regulations.
ECan regional manager
implementation support Nadeine
Dommisse said all of the 500
consent holders now either had
an agreed action plan in place
to install a water measuring
device, or were aware they had 10
working days to provide evidence
that action was being taken to
avoid further enforcement action.
“What we have found is that
once contacted, many people
took action immediately or provided
evidence they had a plan
in place to install the necessary
equipment and systems,” she
said.
About 5400 (or 90 per cent of
the 5900 water consent holders
in Canterbury) had already
provided evidence they complied
with the regulations.
INSPECTION TIME: A correctly installed water measuring system
undergoing verification by an ECan environment protection
officer to ensure an accurate flow-rate measurement.
All water consent holders
with a take of 10l/s or more are
required to measure their water
takes and provide ECan with data
on their daily water use.

TWO PUPILS – one from
Shirley Intermediate and the
other from St Albans School
– were the voices behind a
supermarket initiative to
celebrate Maori Language
Week.
Amiria Tikao, 12, and her
younger sister Matakaea, 9, had
their voices professionally recorded
in a sound studio to help
SuperValue and FreshChoice
customers better understand the
Maori language.
The sisters were recorded pronouncing
items such as apples,
mushrooms, fish, milk, meat,
kiwifruit and cheese, along with
many others.
Amiria said it was a fun project
to be involved with.
“It was really cool. It took
about 45mins, so not very long .
. . we got most of the words first
time, which was good,” she said.
Local SuperValue and Fresh-
Choice supermarkets then put
posters up around their stores,
with a QR code that customers
could scan with their cell phone.
The code led to a website where
they could hear the two pupils
correctly pronounce the word.
Amiria said she had not yet
tested out the posters, but she
would think about going in
later.
SuperValue and FreshChoice

said that when the campaign
was run last year, the QR codes
were used thousands of times.
