2017 is over. I believe you all had a wonderful
Christmas and New Year holiday. Sameway has resumed
the work and our readers can read our magazine again.
We shall continue to walk with you in 2018.
Looking back to 2017, there were political,
economic and social turmoils which brought us
surprise. Several countries in the world had their leaders
replaced last year. Conservatism dominance raises our
awareness. These shows that promotion of globalization
over the years has not brought the advantages that
many people expected. In poor countries, whilst the
living conditions have been improving, people are still full
of difficulties. Even though the Islamic State has been
defeated, the world is still under terrorist intimidation
and everyone lives in fear every day. The nuclear war
at all costs which the U.S. and North Korea mentioned
has not taken place and the relationship between the
two countries appears to be easing. I believe it will give
people some comfort. Apart from a slight reduction
in property prices, the economy in Australia is fine
without massive unemployment and shrinkage. We look
forward to a better year. Last year, the success of 19th
Communist Party of China National Congress suggested
that China stepped into the realm of world powers.
Without any economic collapse or social unrest, many
Chinese feel honored. However, Hong Kong seems to
be merging to China increasingly and that the principle of
"one country, two systems" exists in name only.
In the New Year, what are the expectations of
the Chinese living in Australia? We have noticed that in
the past year, the attitude of the Australian mainstream
society to the Chinese began to change. China's political
and economic influences have increased. Australians
are concerned about whether the Chinese government
directly or indirectly influences the Australian government
through Chinese immigrants. Recently, Senator Sam
Dastyari spoke about South China Sea problem in
Chinas view which is a different from the Labor Partys
policy and ultimately resign from Senate. And Prime
Minister Malcolm Turnbull even said in Mandarin that
"the Australian people stand up" which expressed the
concern over China's influence on Australian politics. I
hope that this change will not have a negative impact on
the Chinese in Australia.
The Chinese in Australia are ethnic minorities. In
recent years, there have been many new immigrants
from China. Many of them are carrying very contradictory
thoughts. On the one hand, they aspire to a free and
fair life in Australia and are striving to stay in Australia.
On the other hand, they feel China gives them great
opportunities for development and they hope that they
can continue to enjoy the privilege in Australia. Since it is
an equal society and no one has the privilege, then no
matter how renowned they are in China, everyone must
accept equality regardless of the nationality culture and
respect each other.
I hope that in the future, Chinese will be even more
respected and recognized by Australian society as well
as to better integrate into this multicultural society.
