Desperately seeking<br />
Susan 50 years on<br />

A GERMAN woman is<br />
trying to track down a<br />
friend she met 50 years<br />
ago in Europe who she<br />
lost contact with after they<br />
were in a car crash.<br />
Karin Fischer, who lives<br />
near Bonn, is trying to find<br />
Susan Malcolm who she<br />
believes could be living in<br />
Christchurch.<br />
<strong>The</strong> pair met in 1964<br />
while they were both on<br />
summer vacation in Sant<br />
Antoni de Calonge, Costa<br />
Brava, Spain, while in their<br />
early 20s.<br />
<strong>The</strong>y became good<br />
friends, however, they lost<br />
contact after they crashed<br />
their vehicle while driving<br />
to Germany.<br />
Ms Fischer’s son Patrick<br />
and his wife are spending<br />
two months in Christchurch<br />
and she would like<br />
them to meet. <strong>The</strong>y arrive<br />
on December 20.<br />
“It would be fantastic,<br />
if they could meet maybe<br />
Susan and her family or<br />
at least learn where she is<br />
today,” she said.<br />

Ms Fischer, whose<br />
maiden name was Kretzer,<br />
said she went to Spain in<br />
1964 for summer vacation<br />
where she met Ms Malcolm<br />
who was an au pair<br />
for a French family.<br />
Ms Fischer said Ms Malcolm<br />
was from Christchurch,<br />
but her parents sent<br />
her to live in England to<br />
help forget a boy back home.<br />
She said once the pair<br />
had finished their summer<br />
jobs, they were driving<br />
from Paris to live and work<br />
at Ms Fischer’s German<br />
hometown of Wiesbaden.<br />
However, on the way<br />
there, Ms Malcolm drove<br />
into the path of an oncoming<br />
vehicle and they<br />

crashed, she said.<br />
Ms Fischer said because<br />
it was her car, they told<br />
police she was driving so<br />
she could get insurance<br />
back on the damage. No<br />
one was injured.<br />
After arriving in<br />
Wiesbaden, Ms Malcolm<br />
left and Ms Fischer never<br />
heard from her again.<br />
A year later, Ms Fischer<br />
moved to Paris, where she<br />
met her husband.<br />
Ms Fischer said Ms<br />
Malcolm would be about<br />
73-years-old now.<br />
