GOOD EFFORT:
Reverend
Jenni Carter
presented
the vicar’s
award in the
Creative Kids
competition to
Toby Driscoll, 5.
Big crowd for parish fair
MORE THAN 2000 people
turned out for various
competitions, stalls and
other entertainment at the
recent Hororata Parish Fair.
Children decorated
spring-themed footwear
and gingerbread people in
the creative kids competitions.
The supreme judge’s
award winner was Hannah
Booth, 13, of Hororata,
and the vicar’s award went
to Toby Driscoll, 5, of
Coalgate.
The children’s athletic
competitions drew a big
crowd with parents and
grandparents cheering on
their children in the sack
races, egg and spoon races
and the gumboot toss.
Pedalmania was also a
popular attraction with
bikes that go sideways and
pedals pushed backwards.
The event was offered free
thanks to some local donations.
The country auction saw
some fierce bidding for a
few select items. A very old
tricycle has gone to a new
home, a pure wool blanket
will be treasured and many
families found bargains
for household and garden
items.
Reverend Jenni Carter
thanked the volunteers for
making it a great day.
“The community really
pulled together to create an
extraordinary fun family
day. Good spirits, friendly
punters, quality stalls and
fantastic auctioneers,” she
said.
When to water your lawn
Don’t irrigate between 6-9am or 4-9pm daily
Help us keep water
flowing over summer...
As summer approaches, properties connected
to Council water supplies are being encouraged
to adjust when they water their lawns in line with
level 1 water restrictions. During summer demand
for water increases significantly as many people
water their lawns and gardens at the same time.
While Selwyn has experienced moderate rainfall in October, groundwater levels
remain low. So that we can continue to supply households with good water pressure
and help conserve water over summer, we are asking residents on Council water
supplies to avoid watering their lawns at times of peak demand for water.
If demand for water increases over summer then water restrictions may be introduced
requiring households to avoid watering lawns at specific times. Summer water
restrictions are commonly used in New Zealand as a way to manage demand for water.
6PM
Check weather conditions before watering
We recommend you check weather conditions before watering. Watering your lawn
during the middle of the day during hot days or when a Nor’ West is blowing results
in a lot of water evaporating and watering in these conditions is not recommended.
Watering on a cooler overcast day is a better option as provides the best
opportunity for water to soak into your lawn or garden.
Irrigate wisely
Tips for managing your water use
∙ Water your garden and lawn every few days rather than every day. Wetting the soil
surface every day encourages roots to develop at the surface, making them more
vulnerable to hot dry spells
∙ Watering for shorter periods lets the soil absorb more water than continuous watering
∙ Using watering cans or watering plants by hose uses less water than a sprinkler
∙ Use mulch or cover the soil with organic matter to keep the soil moist. Mulches
protect plant roots from the drying effects of sun and wind and reduce weeds
∙ Check you have the right sprinkler head. It should apply water gently so it seeps into
the soil. Some sprinklers apply more water than the soil can absorb
∙ When adding plants choose drought-resistant plants that don’t require a lot of water
∙ Inspect hoses and taps indoors and outdoors to check for leaks which waste water.
