She spoke to Tom Doudney about how her children got her involved, the state of women’s rugby and her favourite game You’ve been pretty heavily involved in rugby with Ellesmere, Canterbury Country, the Lincoln Rugby Club, Lincoln High School and the South Island. What sort of roles have you filled with all of those? With the Lincoln Rugby Club I was JAB (junior advisory board) secretary for a long time and club secretary for three or four years as well; for Ellesmere JAB I was secretary of that for four or five years; with Canterbury I have been the secretary and president and I am now secretary for the second time; I am also a board member on the Ellesmere Sub Union management committee; and for the South Island JAB I have been president and am currently the secretary. PHOTO: GEOFF SLOAN I take it that’s all volunteer work? Pretty much. Do you have a day job as well? No, at the high school I am the rugby administrator so I do get paid for that. We have a dairy farm, not that I do much active dairy farming any more – I don’t have much time. Where is your farm? We are right next to Lincoln, the township is coming out fast to meet us. We are right on the boundary of the Ngai Tahu development, so when it’s finished the township will be right next to us. How long have you lived there? I have lived in Lincoln since 1984 and in this particular house since 1989, so it’s a long time. Did the township seem a fair way away to begin with? It did! There were quite a few hectares between us and the township and now there is not. How do you feel about that? I would really rather it wasn’t creeping closer but things change and you just have to adapt. How do you find the time for all that involvement with rugby? Sometimes it’s very busy and pretty stressful. It would be extremely difficult if you had a full-time job because it does take up a lot of hours but it’s rewarding at the same time. In what way do you find it rewarding? For instance with the high school, seeing boys develop into better players. We have seen some go through to being Super Rugby payers like Tom Sanders and Mitchell Dunshea. How did your involvement with rugby start? Pretty much when my boys started playing, I started getting involved in the Lincoln JAB. I went along and you know, some people are suckers and can’t say no, too slow to duck or something. People kept asking you to do more? That’s right, I would be a delegate for something or something needed to be done and I would just do it because it was easier than finding somebody else. So you could say that experience and knowledge are in ample supply at this busy garage. There are four fully qualified vehicle technicians, two apprentices including four warrant inspectors with a wealth of skills and abilities. There are also three girls in the office to keep things ticking along and of course Rosie the dog who oversees the whole business. Leona says it is important now with yearly warrants that owners ensure they are having their vehicles regularly serviced. This can pick up problems before they become bigger and more costly as well as ensure vehicles are able to deal with different conditions on the road. “One of the big things we are picking up now with warrants is that brake pads and discs are a lot more worn out than when people had their cars serviced six monthly,” she says. “It is really important heading into winter that brakes are working at their peak so when conditions become a bit more hazardous you know your vehicle is operating at its best.” Mark’s Automotive is also a supplier of tyres and batteries with a 3-year warranty on all batteries sold. About 24 years ago. Have any of them made it reasonably far in the game? Chris and Graeme have played for Canterbury Country seniors, Adrian played for Canterbury Country 18s and then decided representative rugby wasn’t for him. Our daughter plays rugby as well. Is she younger than the boys? Yes she is. Trina is 23 and plays for Burnham/Dunsandel/Irwell. She actually started playing at high school. She didn’t play when she was younger because I didn’t really want the kids playing in four teams in four different directions, so she played netball because that was always at Lincoln. With rugby, even though there are a lot more girls playing it these days, I guess some people might still see it as a bit of a men’s game. Do you find that’s the case? They certainly do. Trina started playing rugby because I was working at the high school and I went with the rugby team and didn’t get to watch her play netball, so she thought she’d play rugby instead. And has she taken to it pretty well? Yeah, well she made the Canterbury team last year, so she’s not bad either. Do you watch many of your children’s games? I watch as many of their games as I can. I would watch one of them play pretty much every week and two of them play in the same team so that makes it easier. It’s pretty much what we can get to. My husband John has to choose as well, and we sort of try and even it up between their games, just roughly. Apart from following your kids’ games, has John had much involvement with rugby himself? No, he has said that he is the rugby widow, he leaves it to me. Did you ever play any rugby yourself? No, I played netball. I grew up in Southbridge which was a much more conservative area than it is now. If you had your youth again these days, do you think you would? Possibly not, I was more a cricket fan myself. Did you have any interest in rugby before your kids started playing? I’m a good Canterbury person so I always supported the Canterbury team. Do you ever go to Canterbury, Crusaders or All Blacks games? Yes, I go and watch them when I can but sometimes if I’ve already watched three games of rugby for the day I just want to curl up in front of the TV and watch where it’s warm. But yes, I do like the live games and certainly go to the All Blacks when they are here and some of the Crusaders and Canterbury games and I watched a few women’s games last year. Do you have a favourite game that you have watched? The Crusaders v Waratahs when they absolutely smashed them (the Crusaders bet the Saturday 25th March 2017 Sheffield Showgrounds Malvern Agricultural & Pastoral Association Waratahs 96-19 in 2002). It was just one of those games where everything went right for them and 50/50 passes went their way all day. I don’t generally like watching one-sided games, I usually prefer better contests but that was one of those ones that stands out. Apart from rugby do you have any other hobbies or interests? I don’t have a lot of time for anything other than rugby but I am a pretty avid sports watcher of anything. I used to play touch before I got injured. You injured yourself playing touch? No, I actually stuffed my knee playing netball. I used to play that too, until I had ACL replacement surgery. I used to play netball a lot. Was that a while ago that you had that injury? It was a bit over 10 years ago. I did play touch again after that but it’s not the same when your knee is sore. Do you think you will be involved in organising rugby for quite a long time to come? I’m still a bit slow to duck, so, yes, I think so. I’m a little bit interested in pushing girls and women’s rugby, there are still barriers for them to be playing.
