Crusaders to
raise funds
for child cancer

THREE CRUSADERS will swap
their rugby balls for a plastic
bucket on Friday to collect money
for the Child Cancer Foundation.

and Tim Perry will be at the Eastgate
Shopping Centre in Linwood
from noon to 1pm to fundraise
for the Child Cancer Foundation.

were supportive of the foundation
and the players had an important
part in their fundraising last
year.
“Last year the public really engaged
with the Crusaders as they
roamed around the mall within
the hour and they helped raise a
lot of money.”
The bucket collection is part of
an effort by the foundation to try
to raise $750,000 nationally this
month which will help more than
500 families, she said.
Fundraising will also take place
on Saturday at the mall from
noon to 1pm and will continue in
the evening at AMI Stadium when
the Crusaders play the Blues.
Plan for second worst intersection

THE INTERSECTION ranked
as the city’s second most
dangerous will receive a
$1 million upgrade but work
won’t begin until 2019 at the
earliest.
The intersection of Ilam Rd,
Middleton Rd and Riccarton
Rd was included on the list of
Christchurch’s 100 most dangerous
intersections, released
in January ahead of the draft
Annual Plan.
Only the intersection of Russley
Rd and Memorial Ave was
ranked above it.
City council head of transport
Chris Gregory said the draft
Annual Plan allowed for construction
to take place in the
2019/20 financial year. The work
would take about six months.
“Currently this project is in
the scheme design phase,” Mr
Gregory said.
“A number of options are
being examined that take
into account safety upgrades,
cycleways and the need to
minimise impact on vehicle and
public transport routes.”
It was anticipated that
community consultation would
take place in the first half of

There have been 35 crashes
recorded at the intersection between
2011 and 2016, although
not all non-injury crashes for
2016 may have yet been entered
in the system.
The recorded crashes include
29 involving vehicles only, five
involving pedestrians and one
involving a cyclist. Serious injuries
were suffered in one crash,
in 2012.
Mr Gregory said the intersection’s
high placing on the list
was due to the combination of
high reported injury crashes
and its configuration.
The intersection was last upgraded
25 years ago when traffic
lights were installed.
To decide rankings on the
list, the city council uses crash
data from the NZ Transport
Agency.
However, a city council
spokeswoman said the order
of intersections on the list was
changing as new incidents occurred.
A range of other considerations
were also used to
determine the actual order and
timing of intersection upgrades.
These included predicted traffic
growth from development,
congestion, speed limits, minor
unreported crash history, efficiency
of traffic operations,
pedestrian and cycling use and
community input.
“It’s important to understand
that it’s not a simple case of
taking action for intersections
in the order they appear on the
list,” the spokeswoman said.
