Art Gallery numbers ‘disappointing’
• By Tom Doudney
VISITORS NUMBERS at the
Christchurch Art Gallery improved
slightly during the last quarter but
remained “disappointing.”
During the six months from July to
December, 147,071 people visited the
gallery. That represents about 77 per
cent of the city council’s target of a
minimum of 190,000 visitors over six
months.
For the full year, the target is
380,000 to 420,000 visitors.
The half year result is a five per cent
improvement on the first quarter
(July to September) result, when the
gallery was tracking 72 per cent of its
targeted visitor numbers.
The gallery was reopened in December
2015 after being damaged in
the February 2011 earthquake. It cost
$60 million to repair.
finance and performance committee
stated that its numbers were disappointing
and identified several things
which could help improve them.
These included continuing to
develop tourism, attractions and
activities in the central city; ensuring
more residents knew the gallery and
car park were both open; opening the
gallery’s Universo Bar and Brasserie
cafe (expected to be in June or July);
and continuing to develop public
programme events.
Gallery director Jenny Harper
said the targets were based on the
pre-earthquake situation and the
drop in visitor numbers reflected the
challenging and complex nature of the
current environment.
“We really emphasised being open
as soon as we could, even without
the usual facilities. I’m proud of how
far we’ve come in 18 months; but
it’s important that we return to preearthquake
levels as soon as practicable,”
she said.
“We also have to recognise a facility
like ours doesn’t bounce back overnight.”
Figures for March showed visitor
numbers were currently up to 82
per cent of the lower end target, Ms
Harper said.
Meanwhile, the nearby Canterbury
Museum has set new records for its
visitor numbers in November (63,526
visitors), December (73,045) and more
recently in February (91,150).
