Ann Carey – I understand your
views and I agree with many of
them but unfortunately I feel the
time has come for our police to be
taken far more seriously. Police
are armed in Australia, they wear
side arms and they are taken very
seriously.
Kim Rose Powers – One
side of me says yes. They need
to defend themselves but on the
other side I say no because like in
the States the police are to quick
with their guns and don’t use
them fairly.
Pam Wilson – While I
understand the need pointed
out in this article, one of the
things that has most impressed
me about New Zealand over the
years is that the police have had
no real need to carry weapons.
The method in which conflict is
resolved is done in a less threatening
and non-violent fashion than
what is seen elsewhere, especially
in the US. The shoot first, ask
questions later ideology does not
sit well with me. However, when
the lives of the police are threatened
by weaponry, then their
safety must also be considered. It’s
a catch-22 situation and I’m sorry
that it has come to this in NZ.
Vicki-Anne Parker – Police
need to feel safe and protected on
the streets. Being a former
partner of an officer who has been
assaulted and knowing of others
who have been assaulted on
the job it is just another way for
partners knowing they’re going to
be safe in a very dangerous situation
at last resort. A gun is only
ever used as a last resort when all
other options haven’t worked. I
know that if a stranger was walking
around shooting everywhere,
and if police shot them in the leg
to stop it I would support it for
public safety.
Bryan Flanagan – Sadly, it
is necessary. Some bad will
come of it, but in balance it is
necessary.
Students want to bring change
LAST WEEK my hopes for the
future were boosted by two very
special events in Christchurch.
One was the remarkable
launch of the 2017 Youth
Custody Index by students at St
Thomas of Canterbury College
and other was attending the
community awards for people
in the Riccarton, Hornby and
Halswell areas.
Here I saw people who were
committed to making our
neighbourhoods, their city
and their country a better
place. This is something that
we should take time out to
celebrate.
THis year was the fourth that
students from St Thomas have
released their index which uses
the Official Information Act to
compile a snapshot of how well
the justice system is dealing
with young people.
THe impressive young men
who worked on the project
are confronting head-on the
important issue of how our
young people in custody are to
have a voice.
Impressively, they also
managed to bring together
all the country’s watchdogs
onto one stage for the launch.
This was the first time that
Chief Ombudsman Judge
Peter Boshier, Children’s
Commissioner, Judge Andrew
Becroft and Chief Human
Rights Commissioner, David
Rutherford had shared the
public stage. These young men
are not the leaders of tomorrow
– they’re already leading.
What struck me the most
about these young men was
how much they cared about
their world and wanted to bring
about change that world for the
better.
THis was a sentiment I was
also struck by at the Halswell-
Hornby-Riccarton Community
Board Community Awards.
Here, local people were
honoured for their work in
residents associations, for
delivering meals on wheels,
for advising at citizens advice
bureaus and much more.
As the citations were
read I was doing the mental
arithmetic totting up the
thousands of hours that these
individuals had spent helping
others and their communities
and, most importantly and
even harder to calculate,
making a difference.
We are indeed fortunate to
have all of these people in our
neighbourhoods and in our city.
