Canterbury representative Wong won the match 17-21, 21-13, 21-7. The women’s singles were taken out by Palmerston North’s Caragh Alley, who defeated Tegan Weston 21-19, 12-21, 21-16 in the final. Local duos took out the doubles with Marcia Ho and Jenna Selen teaming up to win the women’s title and Hung Ming Tang and Chris Chen the men’s title. SCHOOLS REPRESENT CITY IN FOOTBALL St Andrew’s College, St Thomas’ of Canterbury College, Lincoln High School and Cashmere High School will represent Christchurch at the Lotto premier football tournament in Napier in September. They will take on the 28 top first XI teams from around the country. The four schools are currently competing in the Connetics schools premier first XI competition. SCHOOLBOY CRUSADERS Christchurch Boys’ High School have 15 players in the 55-man Crusaders under-18 development squad. The squad will attend a training camp from Sunday to Wednesday at St Andrew’s College. Following the camp, a squad of 25 players will be chosen to travel to Wellington to play the Hurricanes under-18s on July 15 at Westpac Stadium. Marc Anderson, 55, began refereeing football in 1992 after a stint playing the game in the 80s and early 90s. “I played to an extremely average level. I was one of those players who thought he was a lot better than he actually was and I had the attitude to match that as well,” said Anderson. His decision to take up refereeing came on the back of multiple concussions in 1991, the last of which caused him to end up in hospital. Faced with potentially not being able to play the game, he took a refereeing test, which he passed with flying colours. “My first game was at Lower Linwood Fields in April, 1992. I remember it vividly – it was absolutely bucketing down and it was an under-18 match,” said Anderson. “I was mentored in the early stages by our late patron Ivan Billcliff. If it wasn’t for him, I probably wouldn’t have stayed in the game as long as I have.” From there, Anderson moved to Ashburton and spent a number of years refereeing in Mid-Canterbury. “I got into it pretty full-on down there. It would be nothing on a Saturday to do four to five games. You’d start in the morning with a 15th grade, then a 17th and a 19th, and you would end up doing a senior game later on,” he said. “By the time Saturday evening rolled around, you were pretty OFFICIAL: Marc Anderson has become just the second Mainland referee to officiate 1000 games. knackered.” Anderson’s most memorable tournament also came during his time in Mid-Canterbury when Ashburton hosted the 1994 Japan Cup. The tournament was a 12th grade competition played over a week. It featured two teams from Japan and around 20 teams from the South Island. Just a couple of days before it was due to begin, the fields were covered in 15cm of snow. “We had six fields which had the snow graded off them and pushed up along the side line, so they looked like six little bowls. I’ve never refereed in colder conditions,” said Anderson. His 1000th match came last month in a Canterbury Championship League game between Selwyn UFC and Christchurch United. He became just the second Mainland Football referee to bring up the milestone. “I got a round of applause from both teams, which was a nice touch.” Believe it or not, in his 25 years in charge of games Anderson has only ever had hands laid on him once. “I’ve had plenty of people yell and scream at me, but people usually only do that once because they generally get to warm their car up or see if the showers are working,” said Anderson. Following this season, Anderson plans on hanging up his boots and spending more time coaching and mentoring young referees. When asked what has changed most over his 25-year career, he had this to say: “It’s basically the same, there’s just less hair and more weight than when I started,” Anderson joked. “After 25 years, you become a bit like a good No 8 in rugby. He knows how to cover the ground smartly and you get a sense of where the ball is going to be before it gets there,” said Anderson. “I just love everything about the game – 99 per cent of the time it’s been an absolute joy.” Nel continues to dominate metro competition • By Gordon Findlater SOUTH AFRICAN Dylan Nel continues to dominant the MVP race in the metro club competition. The Sumner No 8 scored two tries and set up another during Sumner’s 28-9 win over High School Old Boys at the weekend. The 24-year-old now has 11 tries for Sumner this season to lead all scorers in the metro competition. In the MVP medal standings, he has 19 points this season, six more than his nearest rival. “He’s got an ability to break tackles because he’s so big and strong, but then he also has a lot of speed for a big guy,” said Sumner coach Martin Dodgson. Nel made the move to Sumner from South Africa to further develop his game and is currently in his third season with the club. He led the team with 10 tries last season – a feat he has already eclipsed in 2017. It’s no secret that Nel is highly thought of by many in higher ranks. Earlier this year, he was rushed to South Africa as injury cover for the Crusaders when Kieran Read broke his thumb. Nel has also been given a handful of opportunities for Canterbury, including their recent Ranfurly Shield defence over Wanganui. It’s expected he will play a big role for the provincial side later this year. “Who knows where his ceiling is. He is just so single-minded in his desire to get better,” said Dodgson. The Star 45 Sport Crusaders v Highlanders ‘friendly’ before finals THE CRUSADERS will play the Highlanders for the third time this season in a warm-up game in Timaru today. The game is in preparation for the final round of Super Rugby’s regular season next week, followed by the start of the finals series in which both teams are guaranteed a spot. The team will be captained by No 8 Jordan Taufua, with fellow loose-forward Heiden Bedwell- Curtis and reserve halfback Bryn Hall as his vice-captains. The ‘friendly’ will be an opportunity for a number of players to return to play for the Crusaders following injuries earlier in the season, including Tim Perry, who will start at loose-head prop; Mitchell Dunshea, who will start at lock; and outside backs Jone Macilai and Digby Ioane, who will come off the bench.
