Working Men’s Clubs were traditionally male domains that women were not allowed to join. It was not until the late 80's that rules changed and women were allowed to join Clubs and permitted access to the main drinking bars. Women as Board Members , in particular Club President, was unheard of. That was until 1992 when Caroline Kellaway was appointed President of the Woolston WMC, making her NZ’s first ever female president of a Chartered Club. During her extensive time in office Caroline has worked tirelessly to get the Club to the where it is now. “Keeping the Club spirit alive has always been my main goal, especially following the earthquakes,” said Caroline. “We’re community minded and lost many members through red zoning. We still contend with bad roads. I’ve worked long and hard to make sure we get things upgraded for our members. I’m pleased to step down with the Club refurbished and a new restaurant.” Aside from decades of devoted involvement with the Woolston Club, Caroline’s resume includes Vice- President of Clubs NZ; Chairperson of Clubs NZ Sports Council; a member of the Burwood-Pegasus Community Board; and is a Justice of the Peace. She has also held roles as a judicial bench JP and NZ Prison Visiting Justice. In 2008 she was awarded an ONZM for services in the community. Caroline says she will remain strongly involved with the Club and has already started her next project compiling and recording the Woolston Club’s history. Former Vice President Ian Brook has been appointed new Club Present. The Woolston Club 43 Hargood Street, Woolston Phone 03 389 7039 www.woolstonclub.co.nz THIS SATURDAY 7.35PM LIONS v ALL BLACKS THE FINAL - LIVE ON OUR SUPER SIZE SCREEN MID-WINTER XMAS FUNCTIONS WE HAVE THE VENUE.
