10 Common CV Mistakes
Did you know the average time recruiters
spend analysing a CV is: 5 to 7 seconds?
There are too many myths and false ideas
about what your CV should include. Ensure
those precious seconds allow you to stand
apart from the rest. Make sure your CV is
top-notch by avoiding these top 10 CV
mistakes.
1. Too focused on Job Duties
One of the most common CV mistakes is to
turn your CV into a dull list of job duties and
responsibilities. Instead you should:
• Demonstrate how you made a difference at
each company
• Provide specific examples of how the
company benefited from your performance
2. Objective Statement that is Too
General
• Many candidates lose their readers from
the very beginning of the CV with their
objective statement
• Consider using a tagline which is a
statement of what you do or what your
specialty is
3. Too Short or Too Long
• Don’t try and squeeze everything onto one
page because you’ve heard that a CV
should never be longer than one page.
That’s a myth!
• Don’t ramble either, your reader will get
bored and give up
• Only include information about yourself that
will get you an interview
4. Use of “I” and “Me”
• CVs should be concise
• Don’t refer to yourself in first person
5. Listing Personal or Irrelevant
Information
• Only include your hobbies and interests if
they relate to the job
• Personal information such as date of birth
and marital status don’t need to be included
6. The Layout
One of the most effective CV formats is the
modified chronological type. Here is the basic
layout:
• Header (name, address, email address,
phone number)
• Objective Statement or Tagline
• A strong profile section (detailing your
experience and skills)
• Reverse chronological employment history
(nothing past 10-15 years ago)
• Education
• Only list hobbies/community activities/
memberships if its relevant to the job
7. Not Including a Profile Summary
• A profile summary should demonstrate the
skill level and experiences directly related to
the position
• To create a high-impact summary statement,
read numerous job adverts to determine
what features are important to employers
• Write a list of your matching skills,
experience, and education. These selling
points should be incorporated into the
summary.
