Elderly man
fights with
attacker

THE ELDERLY man who was
robbed in broad daylight at a
Bryndwr ATM on Monday tried
to fight off his attacker.
The victim, in his 80s, was
withdrawing a sum of money
from a machine at the intersection
of Wairakei and Greers Rds
at about 11am.
The offender, described as a
Maori or Pacific Islander man
in his 30s to 40s, solid build, of
average height and a short beard,
wearing a beanie, a black puffer
jacket, dark-coloured long pants
and white sneakers, approached
him from behind.
He hovered over his shoulder at
the ATM until the man had the
money in his hand, that’s when
he went for it.
A short struggle ensued and the
offender then fled in a vehicle, believed
to be a white station wagon,
similar to a Subaru Impreza, and
travelled along Wairakei Rd, east,
towards the city.
The victim was not injured,
but understandably shaken up, a
police spokeswoman said.
