THE AMERICA’S Cup parade
yesterday was as Kiwi as it gets.
About 6000 people braved
the savage weather and
amongst them was an old fella
called Ron Mackie.
We’ve got a great pic of
Ron meeting Team NZ crew
member Joe Sullivan (see page
4). Ron taught Joe how to sail
many years ago on the Waimak
River.
They kept in contact during
the regatta in Bermuda via text
and yesterday Sullivan spotted
Ron in the crowd on Colombo
St. When he and the other crew
members got of the bus to walk
alongside the fans, Sullivan
went over and met up with
Ron.
Ron’s smile says it all. He
looks very proud.
On pages 6-7, we look at
the police district command
centre.
It’s part of a series we are doing
on policing in Canterbury.
The DCC is the nerve centre
of policing in the region, where
incidents and reports are assessed,
prioritised and dealt
with. Interesting stuff.
THIS WEEK IN CANTERBURY’S PAST
This week in history saw Hagley Park and Botanic Gardens
included in the city boundary on July 10, 1922. On the same
day in 1971, a record crowd of over 57,000 watched the All
Blacks play the Lions at Lancaster Park. On July 11, 1879, the
Post Office building in Cathedral Square was completed. On the
same day in 1951, the waterfront strike ended. On July 13, 1905,
construction of King Edward Barracks began. The building
was completed in 25 days. In the absence of a true town hall,
it was often the venue for large concerts and civic occasions.
On the same day in 1945, severe gales with gusts to 145km/h
were recorded in Canterbury. The following day saw a record
snowfall of 280mm cover most of city (right). On July 15 to 21,
1979, the D’oyly Carte Opera Company gave performances in
the city.
