We’ve seen plenty of Whitelocks run out for Canterbury and the Crusaders, and two of the three Barretts have also graced AMI Stadium. Could the Havilis be the next family to dominate Super Rugby? After slowly making a name for himself with Tasman and the Crusaders, David has experienced a breakout season for the Crusaders in 2017. It may not be long until his younger brother William Havili is knocking on the Super Rugby door. The first-five was a standout for Nelson College during his final year in 2016. He notched up 134 points in last year’s UC Championship and is expected to feature alongside his older brother in this year’s NPC. “It would be awesome to run on with (William), but he’s got to perform in club rugby and the warm-up games going into the season,” David said. Another Havili is also making a name for himself in the UC Championship with Nelson College. Caleb Havili is the cousin of David and William. The lock is currently in Christchurch after attending the Junior Knights development camp which is run by the Crusaders. The camp brings together top secondary school players in the Crusaders region. Yesterday, Caleb was chosen in the 25-man squad to play the Hurricanes under-18s in a curtain-raiser to the Crusaders v Hurricanes Super Rugby match in Wellington on Saturday. “I try not to let people know that I’m a Havili. When they find out, they always ask if I’m related to William and David,” said Caleb. The two older Havilis play in the backs, whereas Caleb is one of the biggest locks around at secondary school level. All come from strong rugby backgrounds. David and William’s father played for Nelson Bays, while Caleb’s father was a lock for Tonga. “My Dad is a bit bigger than their Dad, so I guess we got the bigger genes,” said Caleb. Before joining the Crusaders, David was working towards a building apprenticeship, something William is also currently undertaking. Meanwhile, Caleb plans on becoming a mechanic after his time at school. “If I’ve got someone to fix up the house and someone to fix up the car that sounds pretty handy,” said David. While making the transition from secondary school rugby to Super Rugby is a difficult task, the prospect of three Havilis running onto AMI Stadium in the future isn’t off the cards. Dunn stable being probed for positive caffeine tests • By Gordon Findlater THE ROBERT Dunn Racing Stable is under investigation after returning positive swabs for a banned substance. The Racing Integrity Unit is investigating positive swabs containing caffeine which were taken at the Nelson Winter Cup twoday meeting on June 9 and 11. Integrity unit chief investigator Neil Grimstone refused to give details of the investigation, other than to confirm a number of horses from the Dunn Robert Dunn stable produced positive tests. The stable had four wins at the meeting. Billy Badger won twice, including the Winter Cup. Dream to Reality and Hayden’s Meddle also won races. Mr Grimstone would not say how many horses had returned positive tests but The Star understands it could be as many as five. Harness Racing New Zealand chief executive Edward Rennell says the case is an unusual one because everyone in the racing industry knows that caffeine is easy to test for. Robert Dunn told The Star yesterday he was mystified by the positive swabs. “It’s just one of those things. Somehow it’s got into our test. It could have been contamination but we don’t know at this stage,” he said. Dunn has three previous convictions for Neil Grimstone breaches of the prohibited substance rule. The first was in Australia in 1992, which resulted in a six-month suspension of his trainer’s licence. The second was in New Zealand in 2004 and resulted in a $500 fine. The most recent was in June last year and resulted in a $4000 fine.

The All Blacks coach hinted a day after the 15-15 draw at Eden Park, which tied the series, that he would like to think some of his Crusaders players might be rested from Saturday’s match at Westpac Stadium ahead of their quarter-final a week later. Skipper Kieran Read is an obvious player who needs to be carefully managed over the next few weeks, and his Crusaders teammate Sam Whitelock is another. Even hooker Codie Taylor, who started all three tests in the absence of Dane Coles and, like Whitelock, Owen Franks, Joe Moody and Israel Dagg, played against the Lions in Christchurch Latest Christchurch news at www. .kiwi four weeks ago, will need to be monitored. All of which puts Crusaders coach Scott Robertson in a tricky position. The Hurricanes are currently fifth, one point above the Chiefs, and would like to stay there in order to play a potential quarterfinal against the Brumbies in Canberra rather than having to travel all the way to Cape Town to play the Stormers. Reinforcing the need for care from both Robertson and his opposite Chris Boyd is the fact that the Crusaders’ 20-12 victory over the Hurricanes in round 12 in May was one of the matches of the season in terms of its intensity.
