Bridget Rutherford reports TWO OF the city’s political heavyweights have squared off, with one accusing the other of not knowing enough about the anchor projects. Labour Wigram MP Megan Woods caught the Minister supporting Greater Christchurch Regeneration Nicky Wagner out during question time in Parliament. Ms Wagner, who is the MP for Christchurch Central, was asked how many anchor projects the Crown was responsible for, and how many had been completed. But she did not give specific numbers. After Dr Woods’ asked her several times for an answer, Ms Wagner listed some of the projects. She said they were progressing well but some were the Crown’s responsibility, and others were not. “The oval was not the Crown’s responsibility but that’s completed, the bus exchange was the Crown’s responsibility and that’s FACE OFF: Megan Woods questioned Nicky Wagner about the earthquake symposium and anchor projects in Parliament last week. The Avon Otakaro Corridor is partially completed, the Margaret Mahy Playground is completed,” she said. “The Convention Centre is on track, to be announced recently, and the Metro Sports is under way. The only anchor project that is not completed, not on the way at this stage, is the multi-use stadium, which is the responsibility of the city council.” The stoush happened in Parliament last week. Ms Wagner believes Dr Woods had been mischievous about how the questions were put to her. Under parliamentary rules, the first question put by an MP to another must be sent in advance so a response can be prepared when the matter is raised during formal question time. Any supplementary questions that might be raised have to relate to the original question. Ms Wagner said the original question put to her by Dr Woods was about the postponement of the Canterbury Earthquake, Learn, Prepare, Act Symposium. During question time, Dr Woods put a supplementary question, asking Ms Wagner how many anchor projects the Crown has responsibility for and how many had been completed. “I don’t know why the member (Dr Woods) chose to stray from the primary question but I saw it as an opportunity to provide the House with an update on the progress of the anchor projects.” But Dr Woods told The Star yesterday that was “simply untrue” and given the question line, Ms Wagner should have been prepared. Dr Woods said one of the reasons the symposium was postponed was because of the lack of progress on the anchor projects and central city, so it did relate. “The answer should have been two numbers. And the fact she couldn’t answer that, in spite of being asked three times, is concerning to me,” she said. “Frankly, I’m gobsmacked the minister doesn’t carry around that information in her head – how many anchor projects the Crown has responsibility for and how many they’ve completed.” During the stoush in Parliament, Dr Woods asked: “Is it the Progress of the Crown’s anchor projects •An Accessible City (phase 1) – ongoing •Convention Centre – ongoing •Earthquake Memorial – completed •East Frame Public Realm – to be completed in 2018 •East Frame Residential – phased •Margaret Mahy Family Playground – completed •Metro Sports Facility – ongoing •Multi-use arena – ongoing •Avon River Precinct – ongoing real reason the National Government cancelled the symposium because they were too embarrassed in an election year to front up to the people of Christchurch over their underwhelming lack of progress on the anchor projects?
