More trouble
at housing
complex
PROBLEMS AT the Pickering
Courts social housing complex
are continuing, with several units
and vehicles vandalised over the
weekend.
Tenants at the St Albans complex
found yellow graffiti sprayed on their
units and vehicles on Saturday night.
The vandalism is the latest in a
string of problems at the complex.
The Star revealed last week that
police have been called several times
in the past year over problems, including
disorder, injuries and threats
to shoot other residents’ pets.
Resident Dawn Satherly, 80, had
her car vandalised on Saturday.
She has lived in the complex for
more than 20 years, and said she had
never seen so many problems.
“The place has absolutely deteriorated,”
she said.
She said she called police when she
discovered the graffiti at about 10pm
on Saturday, but she had not heard
back. She also notified the Ōtautahi
Community Housing Trust, which
manages the former city council
housing complex.
Trust chief executive Cate Kearney
said the trust pro-actively followed
up on any tenancy-related complaints.
Rugby boys get bigger
Christchurch Central
RUGBY BOYS are getting
bigger and stronger.
And our leading rugby
secondary school appears to
be doing all it can to keep pace
with the top schools in the
North Island.
At the weekend, Christchurch
Boys’ High School were
crowned national under-15
champions when they defeated
Hamilton Boys’ High School
22-18 in Wellington.
The team also completed the
perfect season in doing so.
In the past, Christchurch
teams have been beaten for size
and strength when coming
up against some of the North
Island’s powerhouses.
However, it wasn’t the case
this time around, thanks to
an all-Tongan front row that
combined for more than 350kg
in pushing power, as well as two
locks who are both either side
of 2m.
It’s hoped the trio of Junior
Fifita, 14, Anfernee Ofa, 14,
and Tobais Fukofuko, 15, will
continue to develop their power
and prowess in the front row.
The development of a tight five
BIG BOYS: Junior Fifita, Anfernee Ofa and Tobais Fukofuko
already combine for 350kg of power and are the future of
front-rowers.
that can dominate at a national
first XV level is a priority for
CBHS.
“In recent years, we’ve realised
that’s an area some of the
North Island schools have an
advantage over us, so it’s good
to see boys like this coming
379-3589 379-3589
through here,” said CBHS
rugby co-ordinator Rob Smith.
The hours on the scrum
machine appear to be paying
off for the up-and-coming front
rowers.
They also have a good tactic
at the breakfast table for growing
big and strong.
“It’s usually Weet-Bix with
heaps of sausages and eggs,”
said Ofa jokingly.
“They make us run a lot and
do lots of push ups.”
The boys already have their
eyes on the bigger picture as
well.
“The plan is Mitre 10 Cup
for Canterbury, New Zealand
under-20s, Super Rugby for
the Crusaders and then the All
Blacks,” said Fukofuko.
Behind them in the locks are
Josh Taula, 15, and Jamie Hannah,
14. With Taula at 204cm
and Hannah 197cm, CBHS also
look to have found a couple of
giants in the locking department.
It’s not just the forwards
that are getting big at an early
age.
One of the team’s wingers
is Ollie Hansen – son of All
Blacks coach Steve Hansen –
who is described by his coach,
Phil McKay, as a 190cm fastrunning
outside back.
Most of the squad are
expected to play in the third,
second or first XV squads next
season, but even against older
boys, they should still have
them for size.
