Longo is likely to become the latest centurion on a two-match tour of the United States and, while careful not to take her place in the starting line-up for granted, she’s looking forward to the moment. “It’s been a long journey with some amazing girls and it will be exciting. Hopefully I can get on the pitch and we can do the job against the US,” said Longo. The US – No 1 on the rankings and reigning FIFA Women’s World Cup champions – possess a squad packed full of experience and world-class talent. The 19th-ranked Ferns will have the odds stacked against them in Denver and Cincinnati, but Longo is relishing the challenge. “It will be good to see where we stand and there’s no better opposition than the US,” said Longo. Patrick Thacker, prop (Christ’s College), Shilo Klein, hooker (St Andrew’s College), Louie Chapman, halfback (Christchurch Boys’ High School), Isaiah Punivai, centre (Christ’s) and Rico Syme, fullback (CBHS), are among 49 of the best secondary school players selected for the three-day camp. Impressively, three of the players selected from Christchurch are year 12 students. Thacker, Punivai and Chapman all have one more year of secondary school left, giving them the rare opportunity to be selected for the New Zealand Schools team twice. Parramatta’s Nathan Brown and North Queensland’s James Taumalolo will go head-to-head, each in their inimitable styles, in one of the most anticipated individual clashes in Saturday night’s semi-final at Allianz Stadium, The Sydney Morning Herald reported. When the team last played, a Johnathan Thurston masterclass proved the difference as the Cowboys notched an emphatic win in Darwin. With Thurston sidelined, another ‘JT’ – Kiwis star Taumalolo – is likely to prove the biggest stumbling block in progressing to a grandfinal qualifier. Taumalolo was a standout in North Queensland’s upset win over Cronulla last weekend, making 37 tackles and 259m from 22 hit-ups. His barnstorming try kept his side’s title hopes alive and ended those of the defending premiers. Brown’s star is also on the rise. Arriving at Parramatta on a modest deal after South Sydney deemed him unworthy of a contract extension, Brown has been a revelation this year. He has been averaging almost 34 tackles and 134m a game, earning himself the Ken Thornett Medal as Parramatta’s best and fairest. Brown said he was relishing the opportunity to test himself against the game’s best in an intriguing clash of the No 13s. “That’s what you want as a forward, you want to be playing against the best in the game,” Brown said. “I’m really looking forward to the challenge. (Taumalolo’s) the best forward in the game. He’s a quality player and we’ve got to be on our game against him. “He’s a bit different to the way I play but he inspires everyone in the game.
