Not a good outlook, so to speak. A nice story on page 3 about a seal pup the McEwin family rescued. Finn McEwin found it at the top of Gebbies Pass, took it home and his wife and family looked after it like one of their own. Great photos of it having a sleep and looking very much at home. Sleepover for seal pup Luseal spends night in family’s bathroom • By Sarla Donovan WHEN LARRISSA McEwin’s husband, Finn, found a seal pup at the top of Gebbies Pass, she wasn’t expecting it to spend the night in her bathroom. But that’s exactly what happened. The couple’s house is halfway between Teddington and Motukarara, several minutes drive along narrow, winding roads, so how the seal pup got there is a mystery. “It was there in the car park near the walking track, right near where we live. My husband called me up and said: ‘What do I do?’ It was a Friday evening, there was a storm arriving and there’s boy racers everywhere up there on a Friday.” She called the Department of Conservation, which asked if she was okay to have it for the night and return it to the beach the following day. “I was a bit surprised. I said sure – but how do you look after a seal? I didn’t have any fresh fish in the house. We opened a tin of tuna for it which it didn’t eat of course. It slept on the floor in the bathroom. It was a very good house guest, didn’t make much noise at all. We poked our heads in every now and then to check on it, and there were its wee eyes looking up at us – it was gorgeous! I’d love to have kept it.’’ Mrs McEwin christened the pup Luseal. “My five-year-old daughter thought it was amazing. We made a collage of photos and she took it to school for show and tell.” DOC senior ranger Anita Spencer said they had had several calls on the after hours EXCITED: Larrissa McEwin with her children Harvey, 2, and Lyiah, 5, near where the seal pup was found at the top of Gebbies Pass. Because it was late and a southerly front had just arrived, she was advised to keep the seal safe overnight and to release it in Lyttelton Harbour the next morning. The seal pup was in good condition, which indicated it had been weaned and was doing well.” On Sunday morning, Mrs McEwin took Luseal down to Purau Beach. “Finn carried the box; we walked around the rocks and it hopped out and sat there, looking at us and looking at the water. Then it toddled off into the water and swam off. It was doing big twirls and lifting its flipper; it went right out into the harbour then swam back and looked at us, as if to say ‘thanks for having me’.” •DOC’s advice to people if they see seals on or near the coast is to avoid approaching them. In Brief HOME INTRUDER A Merivale family woke in the early hours of yesterday morning to find a man in their house rifling through the drawers in a bedroom. The Winchester St residents found the man dressed in dark clothing in their house at about 3.30am. When confronted, the man ran off, police said. Police are asking anyone with information about the intruder to phone them on 363 7400 or anonymously through Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111. RESIDENTS AT WAR In last week’s article on tenants living in fear at a St Albans social housing unit, it was reported that people causing trouble were parolees. This was incorrect. The Department of Corrections has confirmed no parolees are living at Pickering Courts, and none have lived there in recent years. The Star regrets the error. •More problems, p10 FAKE RUGBY MEDIC Police have not yet spoken to the man under investigation for allegedly impersonating a medic and assisting an injured rugby player during a colts game on July 8. The investigation was launched after the man, who was wearing a shirt that made him appear to be a medic, fitted the injured player with a neck brace and administered an unknown medicine. UNEXPLAINED DEATH Police are not treating the death of a 28-year-old Indian woman on Monday morning as a homicide. They are making inquiries on behalf of the coroner to establish the cause of death, which is unexplained. Emergency services were called to a Selwyn St apartment at about 9.10am and found the woman’s partner performing CPR on her. Detective Senior Sergeant Greg Cottom said the woman’s name would not be released until family overseas had been notified.
