A HALSWELL resident
is frustrated the
Kennedy’s Bush track
has been closed for
almost a year and she’s
not really sure why.
The track, which has
been closed since the
Port Hills fires in February
last year, was due
to reopen on December 31.
Halswell Community Project
chairwoman Chrys
Horn (left) feels the
track has been closed
“too long.”
But Christchurch
Transport Operations
Centre manager Ryan
Cooney said the city
council and private
landowner “have been
discussing the timely
removal of the privately
owned trees.”
He said damaged trees need
to be removed before the track
reopens.
Mr Cooney said it is now due
to reopen on March 31.
But Dr Horn doubts it will
open then.
“The worry for me is not that
it’s closed but when is it going
to open. We’ve already been
through one date. And I’m wondering
what else is going on here
behind the scenes,” she said.
Mr Cooney said the trail,
which is mostly on unformed
legal road and some private
property, was delayed due to a
wet winter.
“Unfortunately, the wet weather
last year resulted in excess
sediment running off the hills
into the Hoon Hay stream as a
result of early logging attempts
so work was paused,” he said.
Dr Horn said she would “hate
to see it closed forever.”
“It’s something I’ve used all
my life and I don’t want to lose
access up there,” she said.
“Police are stoked things have
quietened down there.”
Based on previous years, Constable
Thorn said “things would
ramp up a bit” during the school
holidays, but he had not received
any complaints from retailers.
Although he isn’t exactly sure
why, Constable Thorn felt having
The Pawn Shop on the corner of
Division St made the area less attractive
for troublemakers.
He also said it was possible they
had “found other places to go.”
However, he said there had been
some security changes in the bus
lounge.
Community board deputy
chairwoman Helen Broughton
said as long as business owners
were happy, the board was also
happy. She was “delighted this
has occurred.”
Mrs Broughton said a
“gruelling winter” may have
helped divert troubled youth
from the area.
She said the recommendations
will probably be put on
hold and used in the future if
needed.
