Played at Wilding Park, Linwood, the tournament saw competitors from all over the country vie for singles and doubles titles. Hillview Christian School’s Duncan McCall beat Auckland’s Jack Chapman in a play-off for third, 6-1, 3-6, 8-10, meaning Christchurch players took all three spots on the podium. Diego, who plays for the Waimairi club, went through the tournament without dropping a set, showing great ability to get past Liam, 6-3, 6-2, in the final. He beat Wellington’s Tom Bevan, 6-2, 6-1, in the opening round before sweeping past Auckland’s Jamie MacKenzie, 6-4, 6-2. Diego then met South Brighton’s Ethan Cooke in the quarter-final and cruised to victory, 6-2, 6-2. He played Jack in the semifinal beating him, 6-2, 6-0. Te Kura Hagley Park club head coach Hugo Nurse-Strang trained Liam and said it was a fantastic final, played between two very good young players. It was great to have Cantabrians in the top three. I don’t think that has happened before, we are normally lucky to have one in the final, so this is really great,” he said. CHAMPION: Papanui’s Diego Quispe-Kim won the 12 and under national tennis title. Diego also played in the doubles with Auckland’s Rion Suga, but was beaten in the quarterfinal, 6-0, 6-0, by Nelson’s Finn Burridge and Auckland’s Dominik Wijntjes. St Martins School’s Ruby Young and Hutt Valley’s Rosearna Stairmand were beaten by Auckland’s Kristina Bogomazova and Sasha Situe in straight sets, 6-0, 6-1, in the girls doubles final. Jack Chapman and Nelson’s Harry Pugh won the boys doubles against Auckland’s Lev Gorb and Jamie MacKenzie, 2-6, 6-3, 10-4. Sasha beat Kristina in the girls final, 6-0, 6-1. • By Andrew King RANGI RURU Girls’ School had a successful outing at the South Island rowing club championships in Twizel at the weekend, bringing home six golds, a silver and a bronze during the two-day event at Lake Ruataniwha. A number of golds were won at the event with Christchurch Boys’ High (5), Villa Maria (2), Christchurch Girls’ High (1) and St Thomas’ (1) all topping the podium. The results are a good platform for crews to work on with SPORTS BIG WINNERS: Rangi Ruru rowing crews won the most golds out of the seven schools competing at the South Island club rowing championships in Twizel at the weekend. Rangi was the pick of the schools with golds in the open eights, under-16 eights, novice eights, intermediate eights, under-16 four and under-16 quad scull. It also picked up silver and bronze in the under-19 four. CBHS won the men’s club coxed eight in a time of 6min 13.48sec, beating the Blenheim Rowing Club, 6min 16.06sec, WESTERN NEWS and Avon Rowing Club, 6min 20.99sec. CBHS also took home gold in the men’s under-19 coxed quadruple sculls, men’s under-19 coxed quadruple sculls, men’s under-19 coxed four and men’s novice double sculls. It also got silver in the boys under-16 coxed eights and men’s intermediate coxed eights and bronze in the men’s under-19 coxed four, men’s under-19 coxed quadruple sculls and men’s open coxless four. St Thomas’ won gold in the boys under-16 single sculls and bronze in the boys under-16 double sculls.
