Scope and Editorial Structure
Legal Issues across the Globe examines global issues through the lenses of law, history, and culture. The
basic inclusion criteria are that an issue is newsworthy in dozens of countries and that for each country
chosen there is sufficient information—including an average of six laws/court cases cited—to create an
approximately 3,500-word entry.
Editor Thomas Riggs and a ten-person advisory board—made up of an international group of law
professors—select both the topics and the featured countries. Each chapter includes at least one
representative country from each of the following world regions:
• Eastern and Central Asia
• South Asia
• Oceania
• Sub-Saharan Africa
• The Middle East and North Africa
• Europe, including Russia
• Central and South America, including the Caribbean
• The United States and Canada
To ensure that the finished product is both authoritative and accessible, a variety of people help produce
the content:
• Law professors or academics in pertinent fields write the chapter introductions and offer guidance
on entry structure and relevant laws and legal opinions.
• Professional writers create the entries, ensuring clarity (and avoiding legalese).
• Academics with topic and/or country expertise review the entries for coverage and accuracy.
