Appealing to such a concrete universal idea in the face of a question like this takes several leaps beyond pure logic. Nozick closes his discussion with a consideration on the possible positives of engaging in such a machine. He states that the same machine which would able to share experiences with other real humans, rather than live in a simulated isolation, would be less objectionable. He also states that plugging into such a machine might teach you things, transform you, or give pleasures that, in limited doses, wouldn’t have the negative repercussions that he warns about for the lifelong experience. These uses for such a machine are very similar to applications that we have for virtual reality in development today, created for education, training and entertainment. With a real-life version of Nozick’s experience machine already placing people into these virtual worlds, has our outlook on their value changed? Do we still view such experiences as hollow, or are they appreciated in a way that is different, but as important, as education and entertainment in the traditional senses? What do you think?
