After three months of blissful peace and quiet, university students are about to arrive or return to their studies and all else that goes with tertiary life. Canterbury University plays a significant role in Christchurch but has the most impact in our area, so once again it will be intriguing to measure the change that will occur. Many intelligent, ambitious and hard-working students will take up lodgings in the halls of residence, and many of the same ilk who were in such accommodation previously will become tenants in the many rental properties that form part of this area. And for some of you this may be a little foreboding, ADJUSTMENTS: After three months “of blissful peace and quiet”, Ilam and Upper Riccarton Residents’ Association chairman Phil McGoldrick says things are going to change in the area as Canterbury University starts back up. perhaps because of previous bad experiences. My hope is that these learned or learning young folk enjoy their sojourn in our community with its excellent amenities, and that the community enjoys them. And we will if they respect all others who have made their homes here and raise good young Cantabrians here. Perennially, there is always a minority who do not show such respect or consideration and give the entire student populace a bad rap as a result. Might I suggest that if you have a new group moving into your area, take the initiative, go and say hi and welcome, tell them about the area and its residents and this way those otherwise blissfully unaware will recognise there is a community at work around them. The university has invited our community to the first of its 2018 community meetings tonight at 6pm to be held at the new Ernest Rutherford building, a magnificent new state-of-the-art complex. I encourage you to attend. I know the university is in discussion with the city council trying to alleviate the enormous parking issues that surround the uni. I think the city council has been remiss in deferring any changes to its current plan.
