Skate park delays for Halswell
• By Emily O’Connell
TWO PROPOSED Halswell
skate parks have been delayed
again.
The Halswell Domain and
Knights Stream skate parks are
now expected to be ready by
November and June this year,
respectively.
Initially, the facilities were
supposed to be skate-ready by
January.
But in
December,
city council
head of parks
Brent Smith
said the
“main skate
facilities will
David Hawke
be completed
April, with
landscaping
completed in May.”
This was because the resource
consent process for the domain
skate park took longer than
expected.
Mr Smith said the further
delay is because “city council
staff requested more information
after the resource consent
application.”
“City council staff will
also need to factor in the
HOLD-UP: The Halswell Domain and Knights Stream skate parks have been delayed for a
second time.
existing work commitments of
the preferred contractors
before setting a start date,” he
said.
Halswell Residents’
Association secretary
David Hawke is “extremely
disappointed” with the delay.
Mr Hawke had hoped both
skate parks would have been
completed by the end of the
city council’s financial year on
June 30. He said the delay will
mean “there’s virtually a whole
year of children who will miss
out.”
“Young people are valued parts
of the community, and every
time you delay them you’re sort
of disadvantaging them,” Mr
Hawke said.
Mr Smith said the sites have
been tendered since going out
on November 16, but “start
dates are yet to be set.”
He said the city council does
have “preferred contractors
for each site” and it’s allowing
three months to construct each
facility.
Mr Hawke said that when the
skate parks are built they will be
“fantastic,” especially for helping
to solve youth issues in the
community.
“An ounce of prevention is
worth a pound of cure, my
grandmother would have
said.”
