PART I Living & Learning

PART I Living & Learning with Local Black History in Christiansburg, VA In Christiansburg, VA 15, throughout Black History Month, the town displays banners for the historic Christiansburg Institute (CI). This school was built shortly after the Civil War and educated thousands of Black students from several states. These banners are also sometimes placed on the light posts around the time of the CI Alumni Association Reunions which are traditionally held near the 4th of July. This is one of the ways the town showcases the rich local heritage in Southwest Virginia’s 16 Montgomery County 17 . CI Banners on Main Street THE TIGER & THE TORCH Page | 22

THERE’S NO PLACE LIKE HOME FINDING A PLACE PURPOSE…The reason for which something is done. LEADERSHIP…The capacity of someone to lead. ACCESS…The right or ability of approaching or entering. CHOICE…An option; a decision; an opportunity to choose or select. ENGAGEMENT…Connection or attachment. The essence of PLACE is to be 100% present and plugged into what is important. PLACE pulls together facts and stories to synchronize our history with where we are today and helps to communicate relevance. We can begin to establish our PLACE in the community by taking the time to volunteer with groups that interest us and to determine the needs and interests of the people around us. DISCOVERING YOUR PLACE Look for historic signs & landmarks when you travel. Listen to, read, and watch autobiographical stories. Make time to do and learn something different each day. Visit a library, heritage trail, museum or national park. Support local, non-profit community organizations. Where we are is not who we are; it merely provides the background for our story. The notion of being at home can be both a mindset and an actual location. Each day we can shape our surroundings and our relationships to create the type of life we want.
