Why Integral Leadership? A Brief History of Leadership Until the 1930s, leadership was seen as a result of birth and social class, a matter of fate. Through the World War II, emphasis moved to the “Great Man” theory of leadership, which stated that personal and behavioral traits separated great men from the ordinary. In the post war period, attention turned to Styles of leadership, where each style was a groupings of traits, combinations of personality and behavior that could be learned. An example is “Theory X and Theory Y” (McGregor, 1960), which defined distinct styles using the criteria of being focused more on task leadership or more on people leadership. By this time, studies were based on the leader personality and behavior (Upper-Left and Upper-Right quadrants), and focused solely on the leader as an individual, neglecting the outside conditions of the environment. Why Integral Leadership? A Brief History of Leadership – Cont. In the second half of the 20th century, as organizational growth and complexity amplified, researchers turned their attention to the environment of the team, and its influence on leadership outcomes. Situational leadership (Hersey & Blanchard, 1969) is an example of this tendency. Emphasis moved to the best way to lead when certain conditions were present, meaning that the leader should adjust to the context, being influenced by the environment to choose his style.
