When Lamido took his presidential
ambition consultation to Akwa Ibom
ANIEFIOK UDONQUAK, Uyo
It is no longer secret that
Sule Lamido, a former
governor of Jigawa State,
is nursing a presidential
ambition. Even before
the Independent National
Electoral Commission (INEC)
announced the schedule for
the next presidential election
in 2019, Lamido, a stalwart of
the People’s Democratic Party
(PDP) had already indicated
interest to throw his hat into
the ring.
He has been saying it loud
and clear that he wants to be
the president of Nigeria. This is
within his fundamental human
rights to seek to be elected to
the highest office in the land
and given that he is doing so
within the ambits of the laws,
he has been fearless and dedicated
in his aspiration.
So when he visited Akwa
Ibom State, the heartbeat of
the Niger Delta and one of the
largest producers of crude
oil, he came well prepared to
unveil his ambition and spread
the message of his campaign.
And that message of his has
been consistent and without
any ambiguity. Has the
country fared better since the
present administration came
to power? “Under the present
leadership, are we better
off? Are we more united or
more prosperous as a country?
Are we more stable, more secured?
More divided or being
diminished?” Those were the
rhetorical questions he asked
to which answers have yet to
be provided.
Lamido knows better having
served as the governor of
Jigawa State between 2007
and 2015, though he has issues
with the Economic and
Financial Crimes Commission
(EFCC) in which his son is also
facing charges, he has without
doubt seems to be a good
party guy, a loyalist to the core
and has remained a member of
the PDP, though many of his
friends and associates had long
defected.
Coming to Akwa Ibom State
is significant in many ways.
First, the chairman of the party
in the state, Paul Ekpo is chairman
of chairmen of PDP in the
country. So it was the proper
place to be and the right time
too as the build up to the party
primaries is about to begin.
Also, Akwa Ibom State has
emerged as one of the strong
bases for the PDP in the last
couple of years. It has always
voted overwhelming for the
party from local to general
elections though it had to
settle the 2015 governorship
election at the Supreme Court.
Sule Lamido (4th left) presenting his campaign posters to Governor Udom Emmanuel during the visit.
As one of the founding members
of the party, he certainly
knows his onions and knows
where the votes in next year’s
general election would come
from. And for coming to consult
the governor with the
party hierarchy in the state,
Lamido has not only kept his
presidential ambition alive but
has begun his journey towards
realising his presidential ambition
and who knows, as it is said
that a journey of a thousand
miles often starts with a step,
his visit to Uyo may mean a
good decision after all.
Describing his visit to Akwa
Ibom as homecoming, he acknowledged
with pride what
he termed good leadership,
party cohesion and solidarity
during his consultation at the
state party secretariat.
According to him, his presidential
aspiration is informed
by a strong desire to collectively
work and solve problems
confronting Nigeria.
Lamido who served as a federal
Minister during Olusegun
Obansanjo’s administration as
president , specifically stated
that his desire for the presidency
is to work together to
restore dignity, stability, security
and prosperity.
He enjoined the party to interrogate
itself and brainstorm
on the current leadership challenges
ahead of the 2019 elections
and assured that he was
willing to offer himself for the
rescue mission if the party
shares the same concerns with
him.
While responding, the governor
thanked the presidential
aspirant for deeming it fit to
come to the state for consultation
and assured him that notes
will be compared and at the
Lamido’s visit has shown
that Akwa Ibom cannot be
taken for granted when
PDP is involved and that any
aspirant who does so would
be taking a big risk that could
prove costly, politically
appropriate time the people
will queue behind the aspirant
with the best qualities.
On the whole, Lamido’s visit
has shown that Akwa Ibom
cannot be taken for granted
when PDP is involved and
that any aspirant who does so
would be taking a big risk that
could prove costly, politically.
Meanwhile, the state government
has denied media
reports that Governor Udom
Emmanuel has abandoned his
second term bid after being
offered the position of a vice
president by Sule Lamido during
his visit to state.
Describing such a report as
false in its entirety, Ekerete
Udoh, the chief press secretary
to the governor in a statement
said Lamido during his courtesy
call on the governor never
offered a Vice Presidential slot
to Governor Udom Emmanuel,
neither was such an issue ever
discussed nor solicited.
According to him Governor
Emmanuel never endorsed
the Presidential hopeful, Sule
Lamido, adding that in the
usual tradition, he referred to
him as a “presidential hopeful”
and told him in clear and
unambiguous term that power
belongs to God and that God
alone determines whom He
gives power to.
“As a loyal party man, the
Governor had emphasised the
party apparatus in the state
will work for the success of
the person who would eventually
emerge the presidential
candidate of the PDP. He went
on to state that “we, in Akwa
Ibom State are known to give
100 percent support to whoever
may have emerged as our
presidential candidate.”
It is therefore, “disingenuous
and utterly malicious for a
reporter to concoct and peddle
falsehood of such magnitude.
“Governor Udom Emmanuel
has earned the trust of the
good people of Akwa Ibom
State through the spectacular
achievements he has recorded
in the almost three years that
he has been in the saddle a fact
that even the Adviser to President
Buhari on Political Affairs,
Babafemi Ojodu- a chieftain of
the All Progressives Congress
(APC), has acknowledged
when he devoted a whopping
32 pages in the Mid Term Report
he authored, showering
praises on Governor Udom
Emmanuel for his achievements.”
He explained that the governor
having been endorsed
by key stakeholders across
the three senatorial districts
for a second term come next
year, the people of Akwa Ibom
State would again repose their
faith and fidelity him and will
re-elect him to a second term
in office.
He urged members of the
public to discountenance and
dismiss the said story as a figment
of the imagination of the
reporter.
