Some of the dignitaries having a feel of the virtual tourism offering during the launch in Lagos.
Destination marketing gains traction with
the launch of virtual tourism in Nigeria
OBINNA EMELIKE
No doubt, Nigeria
lags behind some
African countries
in drawing
global tourists to
the many tourists attractions
that dot her landscape. It is
even sad that smaller countries
along the West African
coast such as Ghana, Gambia,
Senegal, and Benin Republic
receive more tourists than
Nigeria, despite her acclaim as
the giant of Africa.
Well, the narrative is about
changing as some concerned
tourism private sector gathered
strength to launch the first
ever virtual tourism in the
country. Of course, the private
sector, is acting in its capacity
as the driver of tourism as
obtainable in thriving destinations
across the world, but also
carried government along.
The import of the launch,
which held at the Nigerian
Institute of International Affairs
(NIIA), Victoria Island,
Lagos on February 15, 2018 is
that now marketing Nigeria as
a destination is easier as the
virtual platform engages many
would-be visitors on a practical
tour of places of interests,
attractions, activities among
others through authentic visuals.
Obviously, virtual tourism
works by taking tourists across
the world to notable sites in Nigeria
their without being physically
present in the country, but
they get a feel of the real thing
and are further inspired to visit
to experience the reality of the
virtual images.
If you have experienced
aircraft simulator or action
movie on 3D screen cinema,
the feel is real and that is same
simulation would-be tourists
get on virtual tourism, which
through a special binoculars,
instantly transports viewers
to many sites and attractions
to experience what it looks like
while in such beautiful places
or events.
No matter how factual and
flowery an article targeted at
tourists may be, the feeling
is more convincing; hence
virtual tourism reaches out to
people in more practical and
result-oriented ways.
Credit goes to SkyView Communication
for initiating the
laudable project. Speaking at the
launch, Femi Lawson, CEO, Sky-
View Communication, noted
that virtual tourism is practical
and different approach to
Nigerian tourism development
issues through technology and
not the usual methods that kept
resulting in same little or no
tourists arrival.
With the platform, Lawson
assured that many would-be
visitors are now opportune
to see Nigeria before coming,
plan better and impact the
local economies during their
stay here.
Decrying the neglect of
tourism over the years, Muyiwa
Oladipo, Ogun State Commissioner
for Tourism, urged
tourism stakeholders to collaborate
more, intensify their
drive as tourism is set to replace
crude oil as the mainstay
of the Nigerian economy in the
nearest future. For him, virtual
tourism is timely as it would
aid in furthering awareness
of the country’s potential to
global tourists.
Steve Ayorinde, Lagos State
Commissioner for Tourism
and Culture, said the country
is ripe for a thriving tourism
destination but needed coordinated
activities across the
stakeholders and supported by
the right policies.
The commissioner highlighted
the numerous steps
taken so far by the state to
position beyond business to
the most-visited destination
in Africa.
One of such steps, according
to Ayorinde, is the inauguration
of the first tourism calendar
and Tourism Masterplan
in the state.
“The Tourism Calendar is
the first of its kind. It will
show plans, venues and dates
of festivals, carnivals and conferences.
It will also provide
guides on how tourists, visitors
and the public can enjoy such
events,” The commissioner said
the idea behind the calendar
was borne out of the need to
encourage the development
of tourism potential of the nation”,
the commissioner said.
The launch witnessed a
provocative speech by Yemisi
Shyllon, the foremost art collector
in Nigeria. In The Ake
prince who spoke on ‘Challenges
And Solutions To The
Development Of Tourism In
Nigeria’, charged government
at all levels to work together
in presenting a workable and
harmonized tourism policy.
He noted that emphasis
should be more on preserving
our culture as Asian have done
and are reckoned among world
powers today without depending
on Western world.
From a stakeholder’s perspective,
Efetobor Awanah,
a tour operator, said virtual
tourism is the way forward in
global destination marketing
and urged other stakeholders
to embrace it.
“Virtual tourism is reality.
It is the new tool used to
promote tourism all over the
world and we have to follow
global trend if we want global
tourists and their dollars,”
Awanah said.
