Question:
Answer:
It sure is! Just be sure that you
choose the right variety – these will
be quick maturing ones like Jersey
Benne, Rocket and Cliffs Kidney.
They will grow and produce
potatoes in 60-90 days, which
would crop in time before the
frosts start to kick in. Make sure
that the ground is well dug over
with Organic Compost, and add
some super phosphate in there as
well. This helps to encourage root
development.
Thanks to Victoria for her question
Is it okay to plant potatoes ready for winter now?
Or what soil prep should we be doing?
Disease
Potatoes can get infected with disease, of which blight is one of the majors.
You will notice leaf spots, and then it spreads to the stems and tubers.
This disease is most common in humid weather, especially if we have
warm days that turn into cool nights. Keep an eye on this, and treat as
soon as you notice it. There are great sprays out there that will help protect
your plant, so head to your local garden centre and ask their helpful team.
Late-Summer Veggie Care
With the warm weather no doubt your veggies are in abundance. Make
sure you are harvesting them as soon as they are ready so the birds and
bugs don’t attack them. Also, with most veggies, picking the produce will
encourage new growth – awesome! Cut off lower laterals on tomatoes
and remove older leaves on pumpkins and courgettes to help ripen fruit
and improve ventilation. Placing pumpkins on wood or another material
and keeping them off the ground will prevent soil damage from occurring
on your upcoming harvest.
Looking forward to autumn planting
When planting or sowing any new plants or veges, ensure you
prepare the soil and plant with the necessary nutrients to help the
growing process. Whether you are starting from seed, or planting
out seedlings, our Seed Raising Mix, Veggie Garden Mix, and Patio
Plus are specially formulated for this job. For existing garden beds
that need a freshen up, add in Organic Compost and dig it through.
